there is a file called old/Makefile.bak in the git that ends into the distributed tarballs. I guess that this file is not used anymore, and it would be nice if someone could remove it. In the meanwhile, packagers have to prune the tarball as this file drives the package building mechanism nuts.
I dicovered this while trying to update the Debian package, but other distros may also prune this manually. I personally don't like when the distros mess up with the original tarballs.
