From a course author:

This issue is in the UNIT html "compiler". Any external link specified
in the visual html editor gets recorded with target="[object Object]"
tag, regardless of the target specified in the link dialog box, which
forces a new tab to open when the link is clicked on. I edited the
html code using the raw html editor, so I solved the problem locally,
but it should be solved in the system.

I have not yet confirmed this on our system.

If this is true on edx.org/master, would you please file a JIRA ticket there and add me to it?

I've been having a hard time trying to recreate this one. I'll be sure to create a ticket if I'm able to, though.

This looks like a real (and minor) bug. I was able to reproduce this on the ginkgo MITx residential release and on edge.

from https://odl.zendesk.com/agent/tickets/13878:

edX has opted not to address this, since there is a work-around. See, for example, https://openedx.atlassian.net/browse/EDUCATOR-1545
