116.1 update deleted all open tabs #15989
Comments
Same tab loss happened to me just now. I'm so upset, I had many important tabs.. Firefox Sync was enabled and used to work with my Desktop machine alright, but now that they're gone on iOS, there's nothing anymore, probably because it synced with no warning to the 0 Tabs version. Is it possible to go back to an older sync state? |
I'm pretty sure more will run into this. Much more. As it is part of an usual update. It's just that it will be delayed in terms of updating and discovery by users. At https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1420423 there's a workaround for techies which tries to recover the URLs from a Firefox sync enabled desktop/Windows version of Firefox. Unfortunately, all my desktop/Windows Firefox instances already have synced (to the ZERO / EVERYTHING IS DELETED version). I expect Mozilla to urgently prioritize and fix this, meaning to recover the lost open tabs from their sync servers! And stop rolling out the update of course until the bug is fixed. Give me back my data!!! So upset, needless to say. |
So where (the hell) are my 50+ open tabs please? Will someone actually start to investigate here? Anything one could provide to help making progress? Let's go, come on! |
Following the steps in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1420423#answer-1596382 I was able to access many of my 50+ lost open tabs. Unfortunately all my Firefox desktop instances already had synced the "zero" open tabs from my iPhone, so I had to restore the
I'm still expecting Mozilla to restore my open tabs prior to 2023-08-09, right before the shitty app store update to v116.1. You have all my data on your servers, give me back access to my own data. |
Hello! Thank you for your comments and explanation. We're investigating the problem, but haven't found the cause yet. We're looking into how we could fix the problem and restore the tabs. Tabs data isn't necessarily stored on a server (one thing being - not all users have sync accounts). Also, the application doesn't have support to consume sync data in that way (i.e. there's no mechanism in place to restore local tabs from a sync account). There's a possibility a local tabs data backup could be still located on your device, but since we cannot yet reproduce this issue on our own devices or simulator I can't confirm this information. This data is also encrypted on your device which makes it harder to retrieve for debug purposes. This is not a satisfactory answer, but at least an update from us. |
I created an account here just so I could track this. I had the exact same problem happen to me on an iPhone 12. I’ve switched to a different browser for the time being. I lost 50+ tabs, including private ones, and I can’t seem to get new tabs to stick. It completely resets after about 24 hours. |
@oldshapes would you mind trying this specific scenario?
|
I tried the scenario as specified, as well as restarting my phone to double-check. The tabs are still there. That issue may have been fixed. If I lose them tomorrow, though (as it’s been happening over the course of 24 hours for me), I’ll update this thread. |
Tried this several times: open tabs are now persistent. I'm pretty sure the freeze immediately after the update resulting in the wiping of all open tabs was a one-time thing (from what I experienced/saw). Unfortunately I can't find corresponding log data from iOS analytics section. Nothing with "Firefox*", only plenty of "JetsamEvent*" etc. among many others. iPhone not rebooted yet, tell me if you want me to look for something specific (name). |
@bcutter Thank you! We've had other reports where this issue was happening more than once (so not only happening on app upgrade). The steps I mentionned earlier was to test if reopening the app each time would cause the problem. (thank you, it seems it doesn't). One other theory is that the problem happens when the application has been in the background for a long period of time (4H + or more). We haven't ruled out anything yet, it could be related to the app upgrade directly too (or for all I know there could be more than one way to get the problem). |
Oh wow, was not aware of that you are facing several triggers for the same outcome. Maybe it's a good tactic (2nd lane of addressing these issues) to not only try to find the root cause(s) but provide a safe way of restoring them (locally)? Some kind of session restore. I saw one FR as an issue here the last days. Not quickly implemented I guess but a heavy weapon to work around all those incidents. "You've lost all your open tabs? So just go to settings, ... and select "restore from local backup"", that would be a huge step. |
Hey hi, |
I have the same issue. A couple dozen open tabs just gone. The synced-tabs.db file is long overwritten with the new tabs, which are all google search results of this issue 😒 This is horrible, and I regret ever turning auto-update apps on my phone on, it used to always be off!!! |
What the freaking h***: During using Firefox (switched from Firefox to another app, switched back to it) it happened AGAIN ! Open tabs counter switched from 24 to 1 (empty start page). Everything gone again! Nothing in "recently closed tabs", of course. No iOS log data. That's it. 116.1 is completely buggy. I won't use Firefox anymore on iOS until this BUG OUTTA HELL is confirmed to be fixed! So DAMN annoying constantly loosing data and/or having to fear it happen 😤😡🤬 Back I am after many years on Firefox. Get your stuff together folks. |
This also happened to me about a month or so ago and I lost 900 tabs! And then today, I lost around 10 tabs. |
Tabs are gone as of this morning. No option to restore. ~5 tabs disappeared. |
Just piggy-backing off this comment, here's more detail on how it can be sort-of-recovered via time machine: But I completely understand your comment, and how lots of people won't have backups. So this bug is still a bit severe imo, and it's the first of it's kind that I've ran into out of all browsers I've used. Crashes are one thing, data loss is another. I myself would've lost ~80 non-private tabs if I didn't have a backup. But even my backup wasn't that recent, and alot can change tabs-wise in a brief period of time. And like bcutter said, this doesn't account for private tabs. I appreciate that the team has at least taken notice of this. Hope it can be fixed soon. |
I'm also facing a similar problem )this is the first time) and while I have sync on, I can't find any history of my tabs on my iPhone. I checked my desktop and there's no history of any of the tabs that I have available. My tabs were available yesterday and today was the first time I opened the app and all my tabs (all 100+) are gone with no history of them ever being there. Not to mention my private tabs 😭 |
Thank you for your comment @jpufferfish and @afaboro. We are working on version 116.2 which fixes this issue. However, we have not been able to revert the tabs data loss due to this bug. We understand that this may be frustrating for impacted users like you and apologize for this. Version 116.2 will be landing soon with the fix. Once the new version lands, please check it out and help us validate the resolution of this bug. Thank you! |
Shame. Was almost about to Jailbreak my phone which I haven't done since the iPhone 4S days just for internal file access, but if an official developer can't do anything then it's no dice. Hopefully the sync service improves in the near future, because it's been proven to be even more fruitless with this loony bug. |
I followed the steps in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1420423#answer-1596382, but couldn't find any tab data in |
I’ve never downloaded software from github, how can it be imnstalled/run?
They write something about needing a Java Runtime Environment 1.8 and I have no clue how to get that.

Subject: Re: [mozilla-mobile/firefox-ios] 116.1 update deleted all open tabs (Issue #15989)
I followed the steps in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1420423#answer-1596382, but couldn't find any tab data in synced-tabs.db.
However, I noticed that synced-tabs.db-wal has some data. (the size of "wal" file was much bigger than the db itself.)
After some research, I was able to recover 160+ tab data by using the software called "FQLite" (https://github.com/pawlaszczyk/fqlite)
Sadly, my private tabs have been lost, but still better than nothing. (I'm wondering if I can restore them from my iCloud backup. If anyone knows, please let me know.)

Hello! Anyone tried the latest 116.2 build? Anyone gets the issue still? If so, if you could possibly send us your Firefox logs it would be amazingly helpful. Thank you! |
Not really yet. 116.2 is installed but has not been used a lot since I switched my default browser to Safari, which Really, next to the former trust level in regards to the company and its original purpose compared to Apple (iCloud) I currently use FF only as bookmarks dealer in both directions (and sending/receiving tabs is quite nice, but I use Pocket a lot so even this is not a USP). Even the bug might be fixed, the fact most of my / our data is unrecoverable lost left me with a big dump in level of trust to Mozilla. On the other hand it's "just software" and can contain bugs - but we still don't know how this faulty 116.1 update could be deployed without discovering this ugly bug before. Back to original question: |
I understand. For cookie issues the main one is tracked in #11994, with the issue explanation being here. There's also feature requests regarding ad blocker and toolbar tabs switching which are a good place to discuss those. Also, if you rather want to have a general broader discussion about the application and it's current state, I suggest joining us (the devs) on Element chat or open a discussion on Github. If you rather have conversation in the official support channels, where dedicated people from support can register your feedback you can go on this website. Thank you! |
Just lost all my hundreds (don't actually know how many hundred) of tabs today for the first time! FF has been buggy and refusing to reload tabs for a while (a few weeks). All my tabs were there this morning when I was using the browser, and then this afternoon when I opened it they were all gone! I'm running Firefox 116.2 (33536). {"app_name":"Client","timestamp":"2023-08-08 08:27:25.00 -0400","app_version":"115.1","slice_uuid":"03f21dee-15e7-3ca9-84d2-fbd19656ae10","adam_id":"989804926","build_version":"32781","platform":2,"bundleID":"org.mozilla.ios.Firefox","share_with_app_devs":0,"is_first_party":0,"bug_type":"309","os_version":"iPhone OS 16.6 (20G75)","roots_installed":0,"name":"Client","incident_id":"690649D2-EA74-4088-92B0-8FFE553F8571"} |
Hi! Just chiming in to say I also recently lost hundreds of tabs o. Firefox iOS. I thought I must have accidentally hit the trash can button, but it seemed unlikely, and this bug makes much more sense. |
@reblake I suggest putting log outputs in a file attachment next time |
I lost all my tabs again! It happened to me at least 3 time in the past year, so it's not exclusive to the new Firefox version. Device: iPhone 6s, currently running iOS 15.7.8 |
Updated to version 117.0 three days ago and just lost all open tabs, same as in previous versions. Confirming that this issue still persists in 117.0. iOS 16.3.1, iPhone Xs |
Can confirm this just happened to me on 117.0 (33736), iPhone SE Gen2, iOS 17 (Dev Beta 8). In my case the tabs (>100, mix of private and normal state) were saved in the both the app upgrade and iOS update. The data loss seemed to occur after the device restarted following a low-battery shutdown. Logs are saved I just can’t seem to attach them from mobile browser - will follow up with them shortly. I would also like to echo the earlier request for some “sledgehammer” workaround for this issue as it seems to be problematic to track down. This is the easily the sixth time I’ve had this happen over several months, and I’m extremely frustrated with the tab management experience of Firefox right now. I’m not sure if the long-term answer involves keeping an old version of Firefox Sync data for 24 hours allowing for a manual “help my tabs got lost!” button on iOS (similar to the already existing Desktop feature just powered by Sync not a local DB). Really, ANYTHING would be better than the “oops they’re all gone!” we have right now would be an improvement. And if the powers that be aren’t considering this an important enough issue to bother fixing (along with the cookie issue) - right now I don’t believe this browser is stable/useable, and am reverting to Safari (and judging from GitHub comments I’m not alone, and we’re just the tech-heads who know what a bug tracker is!!) |
This just happened to me again. Absolutely deplorable. |
I'm on 117.2, yes.
|
I’m on 117.2 and just lost all my tabs. I don’t know what resulted in losing them. I just opened Firefox and they were gone. |
@keg247 Would you mind sharing your device logs with us to help debug? You can find instructions on how to get them here https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/firefox-ios/wiki/How-to-get-your-Firefox-logs |
Looks like my log is 259mb. What’s the best way to get it to you? |
I had this bug again 2 days ago. This time on Firefox 117.3 I checked the logs and unfortunately, the logs don't go back far back enough to when the issue occured. Device: iPhone 6s, currently running iOS 15.7.8 |
It is a GIANT pain in the butt, but I lost my tabs as well. I saved my browser.db file, and opened it up in some SQlite browser. Specifically in the page_metadata table, and I am not sure why it does this, but there were a TON of my tabs that had NULL in the URL field, maybe that's why it wasn't showing up as tabs. Some of the site info showed up in the cache_key field or media_url, at least enough for me to piece through it again. Your mileage may vary, but it helped me out. My guess is that it had something to do with labeling tabs as inactive (which is a terrible idea, whoever thought that was a smart thing, well I have a bridge to sell you...) I think this because in the logs, there are THOUSANDS of lines looking like
as far back as March. Lately, the log looks like this:
I dont know what PreserveTabs or TabManagerImplementation are doing, but still, if you can get at your browser.db, it might be worth looking into. |
Steps to reproduce
Update to 116.1 (App Store update from 2023-08-09)
Start Firefox for iOS
It will hang/crash
Opening it again will start with 0 (ZERO!) open tabs
Expected behavior
Tabs are restored as before the update
Actual behavior
All open tabs are gone. Active, inactive and even private browsing ones
