Why withdraw? Seems deprecating is the right thing to do here. An alternative would be to define a file descriptor type, that for backward compatibility would be an int, but allow platforms like Windows to define it as a HANDLE (pointer sized). This would break ABI on platforms that currently don't support the call, so the risk may be manageable.
