Does the issue happen with mpv from the distro package? (not from flathub)

mpv does include icons up to 128x128, and as far as I can tell they're used with x11. Not sure what happens with Wayland.

Is your desktop using X11 or Wayland?

Well, then it's not an issue of mpv itself, and not an issue of compatibility between mpv and your desktop.

So what remains is the flatpak packaging. You should probably report this to flathub or whoever maintains the mpv flatpak.

mpv has no relation or scripts for flatpak.

stan-janssen added a commit to stan-janssen/mpv that referenced this issue Aug 12, 2021
Without this entry, when starting mpv as a flatpak application on elementaryOS,
the Dock icon would get duplicated, as if the application was detached from its
launcher. This entry fixes that by allowing the dock to associate the app's window
with the desktop entry.
