Plugin rewrite

today (2021-10-15) we released the beta of our full plugin rewrite!

this rewrite is a major improvement from its predecessor and resolves many of the old plugin's pain points. the old plugin is <= v3, and the new rewritten plugin is v4. the v4 beta will likely last about a month or so.

while v4 is in beta, next.js sites on netlify that have our plugin autoinstalled will continue to run v3.

Testing

to test the beta, you'll need to follow these steps, currently laid out in our README:

Install the module:
npm install -D @netlify/plugin-nextjs@beta
Change the publish directory to .next and add the plugin to netlify.toml if not already installed:

If you previously set target: "serverless" in your next.config.js this is no longer needed and can be removed. You can also remove node_bundler = "esbuild" and any external_node_modules from netlify.toml

Official release

when we officially release v4, auto-installed sites with v3's netlify configurations will no longer work, due to our new publish directory requirement. this will inevitably cause some breaking builds/sites, and we're currently exploring ways to best mitigate this transition. we'll be providing a migration guide and clearer documentation ahead of the release. any feedback on migration is appreciated as well!

Hey team - chiming in to see if this might help sort out a build issue which is plaguing an update to my site this weekend. Builds are failing due to some mysterious webpack errors, which only seems to be happening when I ran netlify build or sent a deploy preview up to Netlify:

Locally, builds are running fine (with next build). I updated to this beta after finding this thread, including an update to netlify.toml as indicated in instructions here. At this point I'm a little lost for what to do next. For comparison's sake, I did set up a test deploy of my site on Vercel's deployment services, and it's building fine. I'm not really interested in moving to Vercel, though, because I run a number of other sites on Netlify's services.

Anything else I can do to help debug here? I'd love to get my site building!

edit: getting deeper in the weeds on this... next build has stopped working locally, too... but Vercel builds are still good? psyduck-headache.gif

Not sure if this is helpful, but occasionally build output gives me a different webpack-deps-related error:

appreciate it! i took a quick look at your branch and ran into another issue i didn't anticipate. hoping to get eyes on it from the rest of my team tomorrow! what i will note, for now, is that i removed target: serverless while experimenting with your branch since that's no longer needed with our plugin. running on node 16, i didn't see any webpack errors -- only a plugin-specific runtime error.

I've reproduced this and I think the latest release should fix the issue. Could you install @netlify/plugin-nextjs@4.0.0-beta.2 and see if it works for you?

I just upgraded and it reduced my build time by a ton which is awesome but it seems like my api function for a sanity preview no longer work. It build and deploys fine but my /api/preview doesn't realize any query params are given.

We are deploying locally. But this stopped happening? We haven't changed anything, but after some more deployments it was working again 🤔

Local deploys can cause problems with native modules such as sharp.

When using v4, do we need this section of Netlify.toml?

nope, should not be needed anymore. new plugin uses a different bundler. we'll be sure to include this in our migration guide once we put that out!

Agree it has a different underlying cause, but the user-facing problem I get is the same ("Request must be smaller than" errors with no feedback on how to fix them). I tested today using 4.0.0-beta.2. Not sure why using esbuild produces such a difference in bundle size, maybe related to tree shaking?

Okay, figured it out. I have a postBuild function that saves our WordPress RSS feed to the filesystem and since it is in our package.json it was being bundled in the handler.

Hi folks. I have found the following scenario where URLs without trailing slashes are not handled as expected by the on-demand builders

Set trailingSlash: true in Next config (e.g. https://github.com/newhighsco/destiny-clan-warfare/blob/next/next.config.js#L26)
Create a page that uses dynamic routing and fallback: true (e.g. https://github.com/newhighsco/destiny-clan-warfare/blob/next/src/pages/clans/%5BclanId%5D/index.tsx)
Visit one of the above pages without a trailing slash (e.g. https://next.destinyclanwarfare.com/clans/{foo})
- Confirm that you are not redirected to the same address with a trailing slash
- Confirm that the follow error message is shown: Function is not an on-demand builder. See https://docs.netlify.com/configure-builds/on-demand-builders/#create-on-demand-builders for how to convert a function to a builder.
Visit the same page with a trailing slash and confirm the page loads
Re-visit the same page without a trailing slash and confirm that it now redirects to the same address with a trailing slash

This does not effect users navigating the site, because next/link correctly appends a trailing slash, and is only seen when manually navigating to the pages

Aah, the issue is the generated function zips are too large. Could you follow the instructions in this comment to see if you can work out what's causing it. It doesn't look like it's large numbers of big pages, so it seems something else is causing it. Do you have any big native dependencies like chromium in there?

No reason other than that, not having it would throw a strange error on build because of swarm-js. This was a while ago but no harm in removing it now it seems:

This fixed failing builds (came up recently, no change in my code, just static content updates) due to function sizes being too big. Also went for ~9 deployed functions to ~3 for some reason? No known issues yet but I really needed to just get the site out there before it got too stale. I sure hope this all works as the previous build setups were a real mess to work with.

Same issue for me. Work for the preview urls of a single publish, but if I access the page via our correct domain it returns the old version (or versions, looks like the CDN has multiple versions that are sometimes randomly returned).

I hope that the s-maxage doesn't mean that I have to wait for a year for the cache to throw away the broken pages 🙈

I'm working with support on purging the cache, but apparently that requires some internal escalation. I'm not sure how aware everyone is about how really bad this could be for people who were advised to try the beta to fix other issues with the v3 (I was, via email support), especially if they don't find these threads.

Hi gang, thanks for your help earlier!

I'm back with another potential bug to generate a sitemap.xml file for my site - this plugin seems to affect postbuild entries in package.json.

I added a postbuild to my site in this PR - Netlify seems to skip or otherwise ignore the sitemap.xml file generated by yarn postbuild

Could you confirm what the build command is for the site? This should show in the logs when it builds. Is it next build or npm run build? If it's running next build directly, then it would skip the npm scripts

Oh goodness, yes that was the fix! I suspect that build command was there as a result of a Gatsby->next tutorial I found. I'll see if I can find exactly where that was and link it here, since I seem to remember it being a Netlify tutorial. Thanks again for your help - I'm all sorted!

Thanks. next build is fine to have as the build command, and is indeed the default. However it does mean that if you are expecting npm run build to run then it won't work. If the default was npm run build then you would fail if that npm script wasn't available, which is why we default to calling next build directly.

Just chiming in here to say that switching to the v4 beta seems to have resolved some weird issues I was seeing with dynamic routes+getStaticPaths+getStaticProps (where some of the application runtime code seemed to just not be loaded at all). So, thanks!

This was working great for me last week, but I'm now getting the following error:

Hey there - I'm trying to implement a sitemap.xml for my site, and running into problems when my site gets deployed to netlify. It seems to have to do with my use of path.join() in my code to iterate over the files that comprise content on my site.

My current strategy is to look through the /pages directory in my code to create an XML entry for each, using syntax like this:

path.join(process.cwd(), 'src', 'pages');

This runs fine locally in dev, and when deployed on Vercel, but when I deploy to netlify, I'm seeing an error in functions/___netlify-handler when I try to visit the url generating my sitemap:

In my case, I'm using an API Route at /pages/api/sitemap.xml.js to generate the sitemap, and pairing that with a redirect in next.config.js to send the output of that function to /sitemap.xml:

Hey. This will be because we don't deploy the src directory alongside functions, just the compiled versions in .next. Rather than searching through the files, a better approach could be to read the routes from the manifest: if you look at .next/server/pages-manifest.json you'll find a list of all of the routes.

Any other approaches I might try here @ascorbic? Initially I had implemented this as getServerSideProps on essentially a blank page, but I had read that a blank-page approach was an anti-pattern.

I also have issues running the netlify build command on nextjs12. The build runs successfully using next build but not with netlify build locally.

Just a note - I am also using Sentry to wrap my APIs and next.js config. Sentry's support for nextjs 12 is experimental but with all of those the build was successful and netlify dev works too

I just tried this plugin and one pain point :
app.js in transform into a lambda, but we can't choose the node version of the lambda.
Unfortunately, we are using ?? operator.

PS: When we remove this, the app works, so good work ;)

I've been having another issue with query parameters not displaying in /api requests, and I think I've narrowed this down to a pretty simple case-

It seems like something about how the script handles dynamic routes- query parameters show up fine if you have no pages in the catch all route/[[...page]].js style, but as soon as you add one, they stop working on Netlify. This also happens if the page is named [...page].js

For anyone else having this issue, using NextJS 12 middleware to redirect to a known page and using [page].js does fix the no parameters issue.

eg, my _middleware.js file looks like this:

I just tried the latest versions 4.0.0-beta.8 and 4.0.0-beta.9 and get 404 and 500 errors:

GET .../_next/data/build/index.json 500
GET .../_next/data/build/authors/oliver.json 404
...

The pages are using getStaticProps and getStaticPaths but no deferred rendering. Any ideas?

Hey.. Could you give a bit more information. Do the 500 error have any Functions logs? Does ... represent the root of the site in that example? What is the path of the page loading it? The ideal would be if you could share a link to the deploy preview.

We are deploying from our CI
It happens with the preloaded/reload free JSON files on every page, for example /.
It's now running ^4.0.0-beta.9
It worked in the past, but now stopped working. It started to happen when upgrading from beta 5 to beta 9, but doesn't go away when reverting. It doesn't seem to work for any of the versions of the plugin. That's why I think the issue is on my side, However, my only change was the update. (first broken: https://app.netlify.com/sites/tentaclelabs-blog/deploys/6197cb61f58a63131d9d698f last working: https://61976f7f0506bddf7aba3b04--tentaclelabs-blog.netlify.app/).
For the 500 error: I do see an error in the console:

Normally that is a file that we only access during build time, so it shouldn't be accessed at all. I'm aware that these files aren't copied over. On the other hand, all features of the website work, so I'm not sure where the error is coming from at all - I suspect it being an follow up error from not finding the JSON files. Feels a bit like it's trying to generate the JSON files because they aren't found.
I downloaded the deployment ZIP file to verify that the files are actually at the wrong(?) location.

I'm wondering, does the plugin move the JSON files somewhere else? Or should they be at the same place as when running next dev or next start?

When you say that you're deploying from your CI, do you mean it's built on Netlify, or are you building on your own CI infra and deploying using the CLI? If so, what's the CLI command you're using?

Hey there — good work so far on this plugin! Exciting stuff.

I'm not sure this is specific to v4 of the plugin, but it doesn't really work when using it inside of an Nx monorepo where there are multiple apps/Netlify sites/netlify.toml files and one root package.json because the buildbot skips installing npm dependencies. Particularly frustrating because running the build in a local Netlify dev environment works just fine. I've posted about it on the forums here. Any help is really appreciated! 🙏

Hey. For this you should set the site root as the root of the monorepo, then the publish directory as dist/apps/my-next-app/.next

If you don't specify the build command and publish directory in the netlify.toml, you can configure them in the UI for each site. You can install the build plugin in the site UI rather than the TOML too, but specify the beta version in the package.json

Beta 9 - Causes infinite loop on page hooking into router

When using beta 9, a page using React.useEffect will loop infinitely.
The useEffect is listening for changes in the next/router, something like the example below.
This only happens when running beta 9, its fine in beta 7 and older (not tested in v8 since it doesn't build, see above).

Syntax error: Nullish coalescing operator

I get an error in the ___netlify-odb-handler function when deployed to Netlify.

Next redirect behind blocking Optional catch all route not working.

I am trying to get the redirects in next.config.js to work.
This seems to be related to v4 beta: https://github.com/netlify/netlify-plugin-nextjs/blob/main/docs/redirects-rewrites.md

I have tested to create a simple redirect on root level.
For example:

This works as expected.

But if I create a redirect behind a Optional catch all route that has fallback: "blocking", the redirect fails.

This file does not have a set of static paths. I use fallback: "blocking".

When I try to redirect a page inside /pages/collection/blog/ or /pages/collection/news/, the redirect fails and gets redirected to /pages/collection/[[..slug]].js. That again fails because of incorrect slug.

So if I redirect from /pages/collection/news/new-slug to /pages/collection/news/old-slug it fails.

At the moment I have other non-conflicting redirects in _redirects and in netlify.toml. Is this a problem or can I use _redirects, netlify.toml and next.config.js redirects at the same time?

This is how my route looks in next.config.js

{
      source: "/collection/news/new-slug",
      destination: "/collection/news/old-slug",
      permanent: false,
}

I hope this is understandable, if not I can try to create a minimal reproduction repo.

When running netlify dev locally, the redirects works as expected.

I am using this to create my redirects:

Next: 12.0.4

.setHeader in getServerSideProps is being ignored once deployed to Netlify.

I set header via getServerSideProps, while everything works fine while testing it locally, the header is being re-set to public, max-age=0, must-revalidate once deployed to Netlify.

This is how this function looks like:

Currently using:

Hi. This is as expected. All function responses on Netlify currently use that cache header by design, so we strip out any user-set cache-control headers. We will have some experimental stale-while-revalidate support available soon though.

It's a syntax error from nullish coalescing (see below). Not sure why that would be - node version is set to 16?

Ah yes, that's a Next.js bug that's fixed in the canary but not yet released. You need to upgrade the lambda runtime for it to work: set the env var AWS_LAMBDA_JS_RUNTIME to nodejs14.x in the site UI to do this.

I'm getting an issue where one of the static page (i.e. /product/a on page /product/slug) will break due to 404 error when getting css, js resources (seems when it builds it's still pointing to old cache files?).

More details:

static page with dynamic route params and ISR
using @netlify/plugin-nextjs ver 4.0.0-beta.12
only happens on some slug param while other param works (i.e. /product/b, /product/c, etc. is loading fine)
only happens when navigating directly to the page (directly go to or refresh page /product/a) and doesn't happen on next/link redirect.
only happens on production deploy from main branch, can't reproduce on deploy-preview or branch deploy
tried clear cache and deploy site but issue still persists
tried clearing browser cache, issue still persists

Update:
downloaded the deployed assets and manually check the css/js links in the html for the page with issue (i.e. check the file server/pages/<locale>/product/a.html) and found that the css/js file urls are actually correct... So it seems there's some caching on the netlify function that's not cleared with clear cache and deploy site?

Ah. There was a bug in one of the earliest betas where ISR sites were not stripping ou the stale-while-revalidate headers from ISR pages, which could cause persistent cache problems. It was only there briefly, but it coudl cause a cache problem that persists between builds. The fact it's only on some pages and not in deploy previews back that theory up. Before we go down the painful route of trying to manually purge the cache, can you try setting the EXPERIMENTAL_ODB_TTL env var to 1 in the site UI, then clear cache and redeploy and see if it helps

when using 4.0.0-beta.13 plugin, I'm getting this error

Incorrect redirect directives:
- In /netlify.toml: {:from=>"", :to=>"/.netlify/functions/___netlify-handler", :status=>200, :force=>true, :conditions=>{:Cookie=>["NEXT_LOCALE"]}}

although there is no redirect rule specified in netlify.toml, I'm guessing this is from the redirect rules injected by the plugin on build? I'm still using nextJs v11

Using 4.0.0-beta.12 and getting console errors for any dynamic routes when Next tries to prefetch them...

This only happens in production when deployed on Netlify.

Happy to provide more context, just not sure what is helpful.
