Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
There seems to be no way to change the standard view.
I'd like to be able to define which view the users see to avoid confusion (we made a video tutorial with 1.5.3 RC3 which still had the desktop view as standard).
Even changing the view when logged in isn't remembered so I have to change it every time.

Describe the solution you'd like
In polls options the ability to define which view is presented (obviously only for pc/laptop, smartphone should show the mobile view by default.
Option to not show details on default.

Perfect would be to remember the preferences of logged in users.

With 1.5 the default view for date polls should be desktop and for text polls mobile view aka list view. The user has the option to set the preferred view in the settings.
grafik

When on a mobile device with a smaller width than don't know the exact value, it should always default to mobile view.

I can understand why you changed it, for the users it's a cleaner look.

But it would generally great for poll creators to have the option. As far as I can see, there was always a good reason to change the standards but with a big userbase its a lot of effort to show them, because, to our surprise, a lot of them have trouble with the change.
Those who are experienced enough, will find the option to change it on their own.

I doubt most of my users even notice the settings and with the quick view change, it doesn't save the view.

I got your request, or at least the solution, you are requesting. But I don't get, what you want to achieve?

  • Maybe you can describe it as a user story (from the view of your voters)?
  • What is the goal of your request?
  • What are the preferred views for the poll types? And why?

To understand me: It is very ugly to have owner settings, system defaults and user settings for the same thing. It is not transparent to everyone envolved and it's error-prone.

And you know what happens, if we would change things: A new request will occur for changing this again. We have some examples for this.

I get your point, as I made the request to make polls relevant for all users where you mentioned that you changed that behaviour recently.
You fixed it perfectly by making it an option.

As long as both option or in that case views are available, changing the standard can always leave a few users with the wish to go back to the old thing.

To answer your questions:

Maybe you can describe it as a user story (from the view of your voters)?

In this particular case, we had a few users, who didn't knew where to vote, because the view changed (to be honest I dont get why, but I had to explain it to 3 people). The poll suddenly didnt matched the previous view and our tutorial and that confused them enough.

What is the goal of your request?

So my goal are two things. If possible get the option to set the default view. For the whole system would be fine, no need to let every poll creator make his own thing, my original request wasn't clear in that regard.
Second goal is just to bring that case to your attention, because at least I didn't expect that change to be a problem.
If feasible let the admins/poll creators decide if they want a new view/option as standard, because if they have users who arent accustomed they can struggle with releatively minor changes.

What are the preferred views for the poll types? And why?

To be honest, I prefer the new standard, but its a lot of work to explain it and at least until the end of the pandemic I need to get most of my members to participate and thats the reason I opened this request.

That's the general reasoning to open this request, feel free to close it, if it isn't an easy fix.

The second aspect and I may have mixed two things together that are seperate problems, is the appearence of the whole app.
If possible and feasible it would be nice to have the option to not show the sidebar when opening a poll.
Again it is probably something some users want to stay open and some like to close so I wouldn't change it as standard, but if I could set it up for my nextcloud it would be great.

Perfect would be to remember the preferences of logged in users.

By that I meant that the options to change the view via the icons on the top aren't saved like the settings on the bottom left.
Maybe there is a way to connect or combine them.
But as you mentioned it isn't transparent that those at the top only work at the moment and those on the bottom are permanent.

My first post was clearly too short to explain everything, my apologies.

Keep up the great work.

When I said user story, i refered to user stories used in agile develoments. I got your problem. But the question is, what the user expects (the voters). More configurations do not reduce the complexity for the user.

User stories are stated from the view of a role:
I.e.: I as a user want that the text polls view is orientated in a list view view because the options are better readable.

The difference is, that we talk about WHO expects WHAT because there is a new VALUE.
This helps, not to think in solutions but in values. The solution maybe a complete other one, than the first thought.

Possible other solutions:

  • expose the voting buttons in a better way
  • expose the view switch
  • ... possible more better solutions to make the app more intuitive

Adding a "force view" in the configuration makes this ugly complex for the further maintenance. At least a poll creator has also to understand what the option does under any circumstances (desktop vs. mobile view vs. user preference). I want to avoid that.

But repeating: A users problem shows that there is room for better UX.
