Not all type of attachments will open

I create an attachment column. If I upload a PDF it will open when I click on it. But if I upload an Word document it wil not open.

I guess the idea with word docs should be to download instead ? or show the relevant apps available on your system to open it.

Yes but I also will not download

Which OS & browser are you using ? we are able to download it.

Seems to be fine on mac os. On click of file - it simply downloads. And for docx - it shows an icon as well.

May be its disabled in your browser, Try to open the doc in new window.

I am not an technian so I cannot see the console. It looks like an issue in Chrome. In Edge the document is downloaded.
