Description

Introduces a new debug command to nargo. Running nargo debug on a Noir project starts a very barebones REPL using the values in Prover.toml as inputs.

The user can then step one opcode at a time ('s'), continue execution to the end ('c'), or quit ('q').

Upon each step, the REPL displays the current opcode as informed by ACVM's instruction pointer, and the corresponding source code location by decoding the corresponding debug artifact.

For easy reference, we attach a screencast in gif format showing the interaction resulting from running the debugger through the brillig_conditional example.

Problem

Part of #3015. This is a first result of looking into #2247, although it doesn't resolve it. From the contribution guidelines it isn't entirely clearly whether the Noir team would rather a new more specific issue be opened to track this PR. Happy to address that if necessary/preferred :).

Since Nargo is already generating debug artifacts, we consider the best approach to extending them is through the development of tools that leverage the information available on one hand, and that surface opportunities for increased "coverage" on the other. This experimental debugger aims at fulfilling that need.

We want to emphasise this is a very initial/experimental state of the tool. There's multiple possibilities for next steps building on this:

  1. Better display of runtime state: show registers, stacks, variable values.
  2. Better display of source code context: currently just the exact source code location is displayed, which of course isn't very helpful in a full-fledged debugger. A proper debugger should show a larger source code context.
  3. Stepping through Noir expressions, not ACVM opcodes: right now each step triggers a solve_opcode call on the ACVM. A user stepping through Noir code should experience each step as going through a single Noir expression/statement instead.
  4. Instrumenting the Brillig VM so that step debugging it becomes possible
  5. Adding the capability to run functions from the debugger by manually entering inputs (instead of being limited to what's specified in Prover.toml).
  6. Etc

demo-debug

Summary

  • Adds a noir_debugger package.
  • noir_debugger adds a dependency on easy-repl
  • Adds a debugger command to nargo, delegating to noir_debugger for the most part
  • Adds a new Halted ExecutionError type to Nargo (in addition to AssertionFailed and SolvingError)
  • Makes ForeignCallExecutor available from outside the nargo package (so noir_debugger can use it)

Documentation

This PR would require some docs unless we decide to hide this functionality behind a feature flag.

  • This PR requires documentation updates when merged.

    • I will submit a noir-lang/docs PR.
    • I will request for and support Dev Rel's help in documenting this PR.

Should we make this tool available to end users, we should document its usage (basically run nargo debug on a project and the different available commands), plus some note about its experimental status.

PR Checklist*

  • I have tested the changes locally.
  • I have formatted the changes with Prettier and/or cargo fmt on default settings.

@mverzilli Great PR!

Re issues, we can create a separate one which holds all of the tasks that you plan to do, so we can keep track of progress a bit easier.

An example of this would be #2568

Also use a Cell (instead of a RefCell) to store the solved status.

Perfect, then tracking the debugger epic here: #3015

Looks good to me. Thank you for this PR!

I think only the first comment needs a fix to merge. The other stuff can be dealt with in followups to avoid blocking the repl in general.

Changed my mind, that can be fixed at the same time.

@mverzilli Can you merge master into this branch to fix CI? I've allowed the BSL license in #3142 but that needs to be included on this branch

Agree, it'd be too much overhead to process separate PRs for those two little issues. Looking into it!

Ah, I think you misunderstand me. I meant that we could fix the callstacks in a later PR as well.

If you'd like to fix the other issues now then that's all good but I'm happy to merge this PR once you've merged master into it.

Ah yes got it the other way round 😅 . Already merged master, I guess we'll need one last ✅ from you to merge :)
