The renesas-intc-irqpin interrupt controller is cascaded to the GIC. My colleague ran into a program stall on a x86_64 server, where n_tty_read() was waiting for data even if there was data in the buffer in the pty. kernel stack for the stuck process looks like below. #0 [ffff88303d107b58] __schedule at ffffffff815c4b20 #1 [ffff88303d107bd0] schedule at ffffffff815c513e #2 [ffff88303d107bf0] schedule_timeout at ffffffff815c7818 #3 [ffff88303d107ca0] wait_woken at ffffffff81096bd2 #4 [ffff88303d107ce0] n_tty_read at ffffffff8136fa23 #5 [ffff88303d107dd0] tty_read at ffffffff81368013 #6 [ffff88303d107e20] __vfs_read at ffffffff811a3704 #7 [ffff88303d107ec0] vfs_read at ffffffff811a3a57 #8 [ffff88303d107f00] sys_read at ffffffff811a4306 #9 [ffff88303d107f50] entry_SYSCALL_64_fastpath at ffffffff815c86d7 There seems to be two problems causing this issue. First, in drivers/tty/n_tty.c, __receive_buf() stores the data and updates ldata->commit_head using smp_store_release() and then checks the wait queue using waitqueue_active(). However, since there is no memory barrier, __receive_buf() could return without calling wake_up_interactive_poll(), and at the same time, n_tty_read() could start to wait in wait_woken() as in the following chart. __receive_buf() n_tty_read() ------------------------------------------------------------------------ if (waitqueue_active(&tty->read_wait)) /* Memory operations issued after the RELEASE may be completed before the RELEASE operation has completed */ add_wait_queue(&tty->read_wait, &wait); ... if (!input_available_p(tty, 0)) { smp_store_release(&ldata->commit_head, ldata->read_head); ... timeout = wait_woken(&wait, TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE, timeout); ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The second problem is that n_tty_read() also lacks a memory barrier call and could also cause __receive_buf() to return without calling wake_up_interactive_poll(), and n_tty_read() to wait in wait_woken() as in the chart below. __receive_buf() n_tty_read() ------------------------------------------------------------------------ spin_lock_irqsave(&q->lock, flags); /* from add_wait_queue() */ ... if (!input_available_p(tty, 0)) { /* Memory operations issued after the RELEASE may be completed before the RELEASE operation has completed */ smp_store_release(&ldata->commit_head, ldata->read_head); if (waitqueue_active(&tty->read_wait)) __add_wait_queue(q, wait); spin_unlock_irqrestore(&q->lock,flags); /* from add_wait_queue() */ ... timeout = wait_woken(&wait, TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE, timeout); ------------------------------------------------------------------------ There are also other places in drivers/tty/n_tty.c which have similar calls to waitqueue_active(), so instead of adding many memory barrier calls, this patch simply removes the call to waitqueue_active(), leaving just wake_up*() behind. This fixes both problems because, even though the memory access before or after the spinlocks in both wake_up*() and add_wait_queue() can sneak into the critical section, it cannot go past it and the critical section assures that they will be serialized (please see "INTER-CPU ACQUIRING BARRIER EFFECTS" in Documentation/memory-barriers.txt for a better explanation). Moreover, the resulting code is much simpler. Latency measurement using a ping-pong test over a pty doesn't show any visible performance drop. When a43eec3 ("bpf: introduce bpf_perf_event_output() helper") added PERF_COUNT_SW_BPF_OUTPUT we ended up with a new entry in the event_symbols_sw array that wasn't initialized, thus set to NULL, fix print_symbol_events() to check for that case so that we don't crash if this happens again. If the lower or upper directory of an overlayfs mount belong to a btrfs file system and we fsync the file through the overlayfs' merged directory we ended up accessing an inode that didn't belong to btrfs as if it were a btrfs inode at btrfs_sync_file() resulting in a crash like the following: [ 7782.588845] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000544 [ 7782.590624] IP: [<ffffffffa030b7ab>] btrfs_sync_file+0x11b/0x3e9 [btrfs] [ 7782.591931] PGD 4d954067 PUD 1e878067 PMD 0 [ 7782.592016] Oops: 0002 [#6] PREEMPT SMP DEBUG_PAGEALLOC [ 7782.592016] Modules linked in: btrfs overlay ppdev crc32c_generic evdev xor raid6_pq psmouse pcspkr sg serio_raw acpi_cpufreq parport_pc parport tpm_tis i2c_piix4 tpm i2c_core processor button loop autofs4 ext4 crc16 mbcache jbd2 sr_mod cdrom sd_mod ata_generic virtio_scsi ata_piix virtio_pci libata virtio_ring virtio scsi_mod e1000 floppy [last unloaded: btrfs] [ 7782.592016] CPU: 10 PID: 16437 Comm: xfs_io Tainted: G D 4.5.0-rc6-btrfs-next-26+ #1 [ 7782.592016] Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS by qemu-project.org 04/01/2014 [ 7782.592016] task: ffff88001b8d40c0 ti: ffff880137488000 task.ti: ffff880137488000 [ 7782.592016] RIP: 0010:[<ffffffffa030b7ab>] [<ffffffffa030b7ab>] btrfs_sync_file+0x11b/0x3e9 [btrfs] [ 7782.592016] RSP: 0018:ffff88013748be40 EFLAGS: 00010286 [ 7782.592016] RAX: 0000000080000000 RBX: ffff880133b30c88 RCX: 0000000000000001 [ 7782.592016] RDX: 0000000000000001 RSI: ffffffff8148fec0 RDI: 00000000ffffffff [ 7782.592016] RBP: ffff88013748bec0 R08: 0000000000000001 R09: 0000000000000000 [ 7782.624248] R10: ffff88013748be40 R11: 0000000000000246 R12: 0000000000000000 [ 7782.624248] R13: 0000000000000000 R14: 00000000009305a0 R15: ffff880015e3be40 [ 7782.624248] FS: 00007fa83b9cb700(0000) GS:ffff88023ed40000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 [ 7782.624248] CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 0000000080050033 [ 7782.624248] CR2: 0000000000000544 CR3: 00000001fa652000 CR4: 00000000000006e0 [ 7782.624248] Stack: [ 7782.624248] ffffffff8108b5cc ffff88013748bec0 0000000000000246 ffff8800b005ded0 [ 7782.624248] ffff880133b30d60 8000000000000000 7fffffffffffffff 0000000000000246 [ 7782.624248] 0000000000000246 ffffffff81074f9b ffffffff8104357c ffff880015e3be40 [ 7782.624248] Call Trace: [ 7782.624248] [<ffffffff8108b5cc>] ? arch_local_irq_save+0x9/0xc [ 7782.624248] [<ffffffff81074f9b>] ? ___might_sleep+0xce/0x217 [ 7782.624248] [<ffffffff8104357c>] ? __do_page_fault+0x3c0/0x43a [ 7782.624248] [<ffffffff811a2351>] vfs_fsync_range+0x8c/0x9e [ 7782.624248] [<ffffffff811a237f>] vfs_fsync+0x1c/0x1e [ 7782.624248] [<ffffffff811a24d6>] do_fsync+0x31/0x4a [ 7782.624248] [<ffffffff811a2700>] SyS_fsync+0x10/0x14 [ 7782.624248] [<ffffffff81493617>] entry_SYSCALL_64_fastpath+0x12/0x6b [ 7782.624248] Code: 85 c0 0f 85 e2 02 00 00 48 8b 45 b0 31 f6 4c 29 e8 48 ff c0 48 89 45 a8 48 8d 83 d8 00 00 00 48 89 c7 48 89 45 a0 e8 fc 43 18 e1 <f0> 41 ff 84 24 44 05 00 00 48 8b 83 58 ff ff ff 48 c1 e8 07 83 [ 7782.624248] RIP [<ffffffffa030b7ab>] btrfs_sync_file+0x11b/0x3e9 [btrfs] [ 7782.624248] RSP <ffff88013748be40> [ 7782.624248] CR2: 0000000000000544 [ 7782.661994] ---[ end trace 721e14960eb939bc ]--- This started happening since commit 4bacc9c (overlayfs: Make f_path always point to the overlay and f_inode to the underlay) and even though after this change we could still access the btrfs inode through struct file->f_mapping->host or struct file->f_inode, we would end up resulting in more similar issues later on at check_parent_dirs_for_sync() because the dentry we got (from struct file->f_path.dentry) was from overlayfs and not from btrfs, that is, we had no way of getting the dentry that belonged to btrfs (we always got the dentry that belonged to overlayfs). The new patch from Miklos Szeredi, titled "vfs: add file_dentry()" and recently submitted to linux-fsdevel, adds a file_dentry() API that allows us to get the btrfs dentry from the input file and therefore being able to fsync when the upper and lower directories belong to btrfs filesystems. This issue has been reported several times by users in the mailing list and bugzilla. A test case for xfstests is being submitted as well. If from_schedule is true, that means that finally blk_mq_insert_requests() offloads execution of __blk_mq_run_hw_queue() and uses kblockd workqueue, i.e. it calls kblockd_schedule_delayed_work_on(). That means, that we race with another CPU, which is about to execute __blk_mq_run_hw_queue() work. Further debugging shows the following traces from different CPUs: CPU#0 CPU#1 ---------------------------------- ------------------------------- reqeust A inserted STORE hctx->ctx_map[0] bit marked kblockd_schedule...() returns 1 <schedule to kblockd workqueue> request B inserted STORE hctx->ctx_map[1] bit marked kblockd_schedule...() returns 0 *** WORK PENDING bit is cleared *** flush_busy_ctxs() is executed, but bit 1, set by CPU#1, is not observed As a result request B pended forever. This behaviour can be explained by speculative LOAD of hctx->ctx_map on CPU#0, which is reordered with clear of PENDING bit and executed _before_ actual STORE of bit 1 on CPU#1. The proper fix is an explicit full barrier <mfence>, which guarantees that clear of PENDING bit is to be executed before all possible speculative LOADS or STORES inside actual work function. commit d144dfe upstream. If we use USB ID pin as wakeup source, and there is a USB block device on this USB OTG (ID) cable, the system will be deadlock after system resume. The root cause for this problem is: the workqueue ci_otg may try to remove hcd before the driver resume has finished, and hcd will disconnect the device on it, then, it will call device_release_driver, and holds the device lock "dev->mutex", but it is never unlocked since it waits workqueue writeback to run to flush the block information, but the workqueue writeback is freezable, it is not thawed before driver resume has finished. When the driver (device: sd 0:0:0:0:) resume goes to dpm_complete, it tries to get its device lock "dev->mutex", but it can't get it forever, then the deadlock occurs. Below call stacks show the situation. So, in order to fix this problem, we need to change workqueue ci_otg as freezable, then the work item in this workqueue will be run after driver's resume, this workqueue will not be blocked forever like above case since the workqueue writeback has been thawed too. …mgmt() commit 05a0587 upstream. The lpfc_sli4_scmd_to_wqidx_distr() function expects the scsi_cmnd 'lpfc_cmd->pCmd' not to be null, and point to the midlayer command. That's not true in the .eh_(device|target|bus)_reset_handler path, because lpfc_send_taskmgmt() sends commands not from the midlayer, so does not set 'lpfc_cmd->pCmd'. That is true in the .queuecommand path because lpfc_queuecommand() stores the scsi_cmnd from midlayer in lpfc_cmd->pCmd; and lpfc_cmd is stored by lpfc_scsi_prep_cmnd() in piocbq->context1 -- which is passed to lpfc_sli4_scmd_to_wqidx_distr() as lpfc_cmd parameter. This problem can be hit on SCSI EH, and immediately with sg_reset. These 2 test-cases demonstrate the problem/fix with next-20160601. Test-case 1) sg_reset # strace sg_reset --device /dev/sdm <...> open("/dev/sdm", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK) = 3 ioctl(3, SG_SCSI_RESET, 0x3fffde6d0994 <unfinished ...> +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++ Segmentation fault # dmesg Unable to handle kernel paging request for data at address 0x00000000 Faulting instruction address: 0xd00000001c88442c Oops: Kernel access of bad area, sig: 11 [#1] <...> CPU: 104 PID: 16333 Comm: sg_reset Tainted: G W 4.7.0-rc1-next-20160601-00004-g95b89dc #6 <...> NIP [d00000001c88442c] lpfc_sli4_scmd_to_wqidx_distr+0xc/0xd0 [lpfc] LR [d00000001c826fe8] lpfc_sli_calc_ring.part.27+0x98/0xd0 [lpfc] Call Trace: [c000003c9ec876f0] [c000003c9ec87770] 0xc000003c9ec87770 (unreliable) [c000003c9ec87720] [d00000001c82e004] lpfc_sli_issue_iocb+0xd4/0x260 [lpfc] [c000003c9ec87780] [d00000001c831a3c] lpfc_sli_issue_iocb_wait+0x15c/0x5b0 [lpfc] [c000003c9ec87880] [d00000001c87f27c] lpfc_send_taskmgmt+0x24c/0x650 [lpfc] [c000003c9ec87950] [d00000001c87fd7c] lpfc_device_reset_handler+0x10c/0x200 [lpfc] [c000003c9ec87a10] [c000000000610694] scsi_try_bus_device_reset+0x44/0xc0 [c000003c9ec87a40] [c0000000006113e8] scsi_ioctl_reset+0x198/0x2c0 [c000003c9ec87bf0] [c00000000060fe5c] scsi_ioctl+0x13c/0x4b0 [c000003c9ec87c80] [c0000000006629b0] sd_ioctl+0xf0/0x120 [c000003c9ec87cd0] [c00000000046e4f8] blkdev_ioctl+0x248/0xb70 [c000003c9ec87d30] [c0000000002a1f60] block_ioctl+0x70/0x90 [c000003c9ec87d50] [c00000000026d334] do_vfs_ioctl+0xc4/0x890 [c000003c9ec87de0] [c00000000026db60] SyS_ioctl+0x60/0xc0 [c000003c9ec87e30] [c000000000009120] system_call+0x38/0x108 Instruction dump: <...> With fix: # strace sg_reset --device /dev/sdm <...> open("/dev/sdm", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK) = 3 ioctl(3, SG_SCSI_RESET, 0x3fffe103c554) = 0 close(3) = 0 exit_group(0) = ? +++ exited with 0 +++ # dmesg [ 424.658649] lpfc 0006:01:00.4: 4:(0):0713 SCSI layer issued Device Reset (1, 0) return x2002 Test-case 2) SCSI EH Using this debug patch to wire an SCSI EH trigger, for lpfc_scsi_cmd_iocb_cmpl(): - cmd->scsi_done(cmd); + if ((phba->pport ? phba->pport->cfg_log_verbose : phba->cfg_log_verbose) == 0x32100000) + printk(KERN_ALERT "lpfc: skip scsi_done()\n"); + else + cmd->scsi_done(cmd); # echo 0x32100000 > /sys/class/scsi_host/host11/lpfc_log_verbose # dd if=/dev/sdm of=/dev/null iflag=direct & <...> After a while: # dmesg lpfc 0006:01:00.4: 4:(0):3053 lpfc_log_verbose changed from 0 (x0) to 839909376 (x32100000) lpfc: skip scsi_done() <...> Unable to handle kernel paging request for data at address 0x00000000 Faulting instruction address: 0xd0000000199e448c Oops: Kernel access of bad area, sig: 11 [#1] <...> CPU: 96 PID: 28556 Comm: scsi_eh_11 Tainted: G W 4.7.0-rc1-next-20160601-00004-g95b89dc #6 <...> NIP [d0000000199e448c] lpfc_sli4_scmd_to_wqidx_distr+0xc/0xd0 [lpfc] LR [d000000019986fe8] lpfc_sli_calc_ring.part.27+0x98/0xd0 [lpfc] Call Trace: [c000000ff0d0b890] [c000000ff0d0b900] 0xc000000ff0d0b900 (unreliable) [c000000ff0d0b8c0] [d00000001998e004] lpfc_sli_issue_iocb+0xd4/0x260 [lpfc] [c000000ff0d0b920] [d000000019991a3c] lpfc_sli_issue_iocb_wait+0x15c/0x5b0 [lpfc] [c000000ff0d0ba20] [d0000000199df27c] lpfc_send_taskmgmt+0x24c/0x650 [lpfc] [c000000ff0d0baf0] [d0000000199dfd7c] lpfc_device_reset_handler+0x10c/0x200 [lpfc] [c000000ff0d0bbb0] [c000000000610694] scsi_try_bus_device_reset+0x44/0xc0 [c000000ff0d0bbe0] [c0000000006126cc] scsi_eh_ready_devs+0x49c/0x9c0 [c000000ff0d0bcb0] [c000000000614160] scsi_error_handler+0x580/0x680 [c000000ff0d0bd80] [c0000000000ae848] kthread+0x108/0x130 [c000000ff0d0be30] [c0000000000094a8] ret_from_kernel_thread+0x5c/0xb4 Instruction dump: <...> With fix: # dmesg lpfc 0006:01:00.4: 4:(0):3053 lpfc_log_verbose changed from 0 (x0) to 839909376 (x32100000) lpfc: skip scsi_done() <...> lpfc 0006:01:00.4: 4:(0):0713 SCSI layer issued Device Reset (0, 0) return x2002 <...> lpfc 0006:01:00.4: 4:(0):0723 SCSI layer issued Target Reset (1, 0) return x2002 <...> lpfc 0006:01:00.4: 4:(0):0714 SCSI layer issued Bus Reset Data: x2002 <...> lpfc 0006:01:00.4: 4:(0):3172 SCSI layer issued Host Reset Data: <...> Fixes: 8b0dff1 ("lpfc: Add support for using block multi-queue") Signed-off-by: Mauricio Faria de Oliveira <mauricfo@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Reviewed-by: Johannes Thumshirn <jthumshirn@suse.de> Acked-by: James Smart <james.smart@broadcom.com> Signed-off-by: Martin K. mpt3sas crashes on resume after suspend with WarpDrive flash cards. The reply_post_host_index array is not set back up after the resume, and we deference a stale pointer in _base_interrupt(). [ Upstream commit ef6e199 ] In the function ieee80211_tx_dequeue() there is a particular locking sequence: begin: spin_lock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock); q_stopped = local->queue_stop_reasons[q]; spin_unlock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock); However small the chance (increased by ftracetest), an asynchronous interrupt can occur in between of spin_lock() and spin_unlock(), and the interrupt routine will attempt to lock the same &local->queue_stop_reason_lock again. This will cause a costly reset of the CPU and the wifi device or an altogether hang in the single CPU and single core scenario. The only remaining spin_lock(&local->queue_stop_reason_lock) that did not disable interrupts was patched, which should prevent any deadlocks on the same CPU/core and the same wifi device. [ Upstream commit b684c09 ] ppc_save_regs() skips one stack frame while saving the CPU register states. Instead of saving current R1, it pulls the previous stack frame pointer. When vmcores caused by direct panic call (such as `echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger`), are debugged with gdb, gdb fails to show the backtrace correctly. On further analysis, it was found that it was because of mismatch between r1 and NIP. GDB uses NIP to get current function symbol and uses corresponding debug info of that function to unwind previous frames, but due to the mismatching r1 and NIP, the unwinding does not work, and it fails to unwind to the 2nd frame and hence does not show the backtrace. GDB backtrace with vmcore of kernel without this patch: --------- (gdb) bt #0 0xc0000000002a53e8 in crash_setup_regs (oldregs=<optimized out>, newregs=0xc000000004f8f8d8) at ./arch/powerpc/include/asm/kexec.h:69 #1 __crash_kexec (regs=<optimized out>) at kernel/kexec_core.c:974 #2 0x0000000000000063 in ?? () #3 0xc000000003579320 in ?? () --------- Further analysis revealed that the mismatch occurred because "ppc_save_regs" was saving the previous stack's SP instead of the current r1. This patch fixes this by storing current r1 in the saved pt_regs. GDB backtrace with vmcore of patched kernel: -------- (gdb) bt #0 0xc0000000002a53e8 in crash_setup_regs (oldregs=0x0, newregs=0xc00000000670b8d8) at ./arch/powerpc/include/asm/kexec.h:69 #1 __crash_kexec (regs=regs@entry=0x0) at kernel/kexec_core.c:974 #2 0xc000000000168918 in panic (fmt=fmt@entry=0xc000000001654a60 "sysrq triggered crash\n") at kernel/panic.c:358 #3 0xc000000000b735f8 in sysrq_handle_crash (key=<optimized out>) at drivers/tty/sysrq.c:155 #4 0xc000000000b742cc in __handle_sysrq (key=key@entry=99, check_mask=check_mask@entry=false) at drivers/tty/sysrq.c:602 #5 0xc000000000b7506c in write_sysrq_trigger (file=<optimized out>, buf=<optimized out>, count=2, ppos=<optimized out>) at drivers/tty/sysrq.c:1163 #6 0xc00000000069a7bc in pde_write (ppos=<optimized out>, count=<optimized out>, buf=<optimized out>, file=<optimized out>, pde=0xc00000000362cb40) at fs/proc/inode.c:340 #7 proc_reg_write (file=<optimized out>, buf=<optimized out>, count=<optimized out>, ppos=<optimized out>) at fs/proc/inode.c:352 #8 0xc0000000005b3bbc in vfs_write (file=file@entry=0xc000000006aa6b00, buf=buf@entry=0x61f498b4f60 <error: Cannot access memory at address 0x61f498b4f60>, count=count@entry=2, pos=pos@entry=0xc00000000670bda0) at fs/read_write.c:582 #9 0xc0000000005b4264 in ksys_write (fd=<optimized out>, buf=0x61f498b4f60 <error: Cannot access memory at address 0x61f498b4f60>, count=2) at fs/read_write.c:637 #10 0xc00000000002ea2c in system_call_exception (regs=0xc00000000670be80, r0=<optimized out>) at arch/powerpc/kernel/syscall.c:171 #11 0xc00000000000c270 in system_call_vectored_common () at arch/powerpc/kernel/interrupt_64.S:192 -------- Nick adds: So this now saves regs as though it was an interrupt taken in the caller, at the instruction after the call to ppc_save_regs, whereas previously the NIP was there, but R1 came from the caller's caller and that mismatch is what causes gdb's dwarf unwinder to go haywire. commit 152d0bc upstream. A skcipher_request object is made up of struct skcipher_request followed by a variable-sized trailer. The allocation of the skcipher_request and IV in crypt_iv_eboiv_gen is missing the memory for struct skcipher_request. Fix it by adding it to reqsize. commit d8b90d6 upstream. When scanning namespaces, it is possible to get valid data from the first call to nvme_identify_ns() in nvme_alloc_ns(), but not from the second call in nvme_update_ns_info_block(). In particular, if the NSID becomes inactive between the two commands, a storage device may return a buffer filled with zero as per 4.1.5.1. In this case, we can get a kernel crash due to a divide-by-zero in blk_stack_limits() because ns->lba_shift will be set to zero. …te_call_indirect commit f5d03da upstream. kprobe_emulate_call_indirect currently uses int3_emulate_call to emulate indirect calls. However, int3_emulate_call always assumes the size of the call to be 5 bytes when calculating the return address. This is incorrect for register-based indirect calls in x86, which can be either 2 or 3 bytes depending on whether REX prefix is used. At kprobe runtime, the incorrect return address causes control flow to land onto the wrong place after return -- possibly not a valid instruction boundary. This can lead to a panic like the following: [ 7.308204][ C1] BUG: unable to handle page fault for address: 000000000002b4d8 [ 7.308883][ C1] #PF: supervisor read access in kernel mode [ 7.309168][ C1] #PF: error_code(0x0000) - not-present page [ 7.309461][ C1] PGD 0 P4D 0 [ 7.309652][ C1] Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP [ 7.309929][ C1] CPU: 1 PID: 0 Comm: swapper/1 Not tainted 6.7.0-rc5-trace-for-next #6 [ 7.310397][ C1] Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.16.0-20220807_005459-localhost 04/01/2014 [ 7.311068][ C1] RIP: 0010:__common_interrupt+0x52/0xc0 [ 7.311349][ C1] Code: 01 00 4d 85 f6 74 39 49 81 fe 00 f0 ff ff 77 30 4c 89 f7 4d 8b 5e 68 41 ba 91 76 d8 42 45 03 53 fc 74 02 0f 0b cc ff d3 65 48 <8b> 05 30 c7 ff 7e 65 4c 89 3d 28 c7 ff 7e 5b 41 5c 41 5e 41 5f c3 [ 7.312512][ C1] RSP: 0018:ffffc900000e0fd0 EFLAGS: 00010046 [ 7.312899][ C1] RAX: 0000000000000001 RBX: 0000000000000023 RCX: 0000000000000001 [ 7.313334][ C1] RDX: 00000000000003cd RSI: 0000000000000001 RDI: ffff888100d302a4 [ 7.313702][ C1] RBP: 0000000000000001 R08: 0ef439818636191f R09: b1621ff338a3b482 [ 7.314146][ C1] R10: ffffffff81e5127b R11: ffffffff81059810 R12: 0000000000000023 [ 7.314509][ C1] R13: 0000000000000000 R14: ffff888100d30200 R15: 0000000000000000 [ 7.314951][ C1] FS: 0000000000000000(0000) GS:ffff88813bc80000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 [ 7.315396][ C1] CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 0000000080050033 [ 7.315691][ C1] CR2: 000000000002b4d8 CR3: 0000000003028003 CR4: 0000000000370ef0 [ 7.316153][ C1] DR0: 0000000000000000 DR1: 0000000000000000 DR2: 0000000000000000 [ 7.316508][ C1] DR3: 0000000000000000 DR6: 00000000fffe0ff0 DR7: 0000000000000400 [ 7.316948][ C1] Call Trace: [ 7.317123][ C1] <IRQ> [ 7.317279][ C1] ? This in turn causes incorrect subsequent instruction decoding and eventually triggers the page fault above. Instead of invoking int3_emulate_call, perform push and jmp emulation directly in kprobe_emulate_call_indirect. At this point we can obtain the instruction size from p->ainsn.size so that we can calculate the correct return address. This leads to a crash when trying to read from this file. The driver creates /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/mob_ttm even when the corresponding ttm_resource_manager is not allocated. This leads to a crash when trying to read from this file. [ Upstream commit 88ce010 ] The session has a header in it which contains a perf env with bpf_progs. The bpf_progs are accessed by the sideband thread and so the sideband thread must be stopped before the session is deleted, to avoid a use after free. [ Upstream commit 769e6a1 ] ui_browser__show() is capturing the input title that is stack allocated memory in hist_browser__run(). Avoid a use after return by strdup-ing the string. Committer notes: Further explanation from Ian Rogers: My command line using tui is: $ sudo bash -c 'rm /tmp/asan.log*; export ASAN_OPTIONS="log_path=/tmp/asan.log"; /tmp/perf/perf mem record -a sleep 1; /tmp/perf/perf mem report' I then go to the perf annotate view and quit. This triggers the asan error (from the log file): ``` ==1254591==ERROR: AddressSanitizer: stack-use-after-return on address 0x7f2813331920 at pc 0x7f28180 65991 bp 0x7fff0a21c750 sp 0x7fff0a21bf10 READ of size 80 at 0x7f2813331920 thread T0 #0 0x7f2818065990 in __interceptor_strlen ../../../../src/libsanitizer/sanitizer_common/sanitizer_common_interceptors.inc:461 #1 0x7f2817698251 in SLsmg_write_wrapped_string (/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libslang.so.2+0x98251) #2 0x7f28176984b9 in SLsmg_write_nstring (/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libslang.so.2+0x984b9) #3 0x55c94045b365 in ui_browser__write_nstring ui/browser.c:60 #4 0x55c94045c558 in __ui_browser__show_title ui/browser.c:266 #5 0x55c94045c776 in ui_browser__show ui/browser.c:288 #6 0x55c94045c06d in ui_browser__handle_resize ui/browser.c:206 #7 0x55c94047979b in do_annotate ui/browsers/hists.c:2458 #8 0x55c94047fb17 in evsel__hists_browse ui/browsers/hists.c:3412 #9 0x55c940480a0c in perf_evsel_menu__run ui/browsers/hists.c:3527 #10 0x55c940481108 in __evlist__tui_browse_hists ui/browsers/hists.c:3613 #11 0x55c9404813f7 in evlist__tui_browse_hists ui/browsers/hists.c:3661 #12 0x55c93ffa253f in report__browse_hists tools/perf/builtin-report.c:671 #13 0x55c93ffa58ca in __cmd_report tools/perf/builtin-report.c:1141 #14 0x55c93ffaf159 in cmd_report tools/perf/builtin-report.c:1805 #15 0x55c94000c05c in report_events tools/perf/builtin-mem.c:374 #16 0x55c94000d96d in cmd_mem tools/perf/builtin-mem.c:516 #17 0x55c9400e44ee in run_builtin tools/perf/perf.c:350 #18 0x55c9400e4a5a in handle_internal_command tools/perf/perf.c:403 #19 0x55c9400e4e22 in run_argv tools/perf/perf.c:447 #20 0x55c9400e53ad in main tools/perf/perf.c:561 #21 0x7f28170456c9 in __libc_start_call_main ../sysdeps/nptl/libc_start_call_main.h:58 #22 0x7f2817045784 in __libc_start_main_impl ../csu/libc-start.c:360 #23 0x55c93ff544c0 in _start (/tmp/perf/perf+0x19a4c0) (BuildId: 84899b0e8c7d3a3eaa67b2eb35e3d8b2f8cd4c93) Address 0x7f2813331920 is located in stack of thread T0 at offset 32 in frame #0 0x55c94046e85e in hist_browser__run ui/browsers/hists.c:746 This frame has 1 object(s): [32, 192) 'title' (line 747) <== Memory access at offset 32 is inside this variable HINT: this may be a false positive if your program uses some custom stack unwind mechanism, swapcontext or vfork ``` hist_browser__run isn't on the stack so the asan error looks legit. commit d3b17c6 upstream. Using completion_done to determine whether the caller has gone away only works after a complete call. Furthermore it's still possible that the caller has not yet called wait_for_completion, resulting in another potential UAF. Fix this by making the caller use cancel_work_sync and then freeing the memory safely. Furthermore, item 183 is the last item in the leaf. btrfs_log_prealloc_extents() is responsible for logging prealloc extents beyond i_size. It first truncates any previously logged prealloc extents that start beyond i_size. Then, it walks the filesystem tree and copies the prealloc extent items to the log tree. If it hits the end of a leaf, then it calls btrfs_next_leaf(), which unlocks the tree and does another search. However, while the filesystem tree is unlocked, an ordered extent completion may modify the tree. In particular, it may insert an extent item that overlaps with an extent item that was already copied to the log tree. This may manifest in several ways depending on the exact scenario, including an EEXIST error that is silently translated to a full sync, overlapping items in the log tree, or this crash. This particular crash is triggered by the following sequence of events: - Initially, the file has i_size=4k, a regular extent from 0-4k, and a prealloc extent beyond i_size from 4k-12k. The prealloc extent item is the last item in its B-tree leaf. - The file is fsync'd, which copies its inode item and both extent items to the log tree. - An xattr is set on the file, which sets the BTRFS_INODE_COPY_EVERYTHING flag. - The range 4k-8k in the file is written using direct I/O. i_size is extended to 8k, but the ordered extent is still in flight. - The file is fsync'd. Since BTRFS_INODE_COPY_EVERYTHING is set, this calls copy_inode_items_to_log(), which calls btrfs_log_prealloc_extents(). - btrfs_log_prealloc_extents() finds the 4k-12k prealloc extent in the filesystem tree. Since it starts before i_size, it skips it. Since it is the last item in its B-tree leaf, it calls btrfs_next_leaf(). - btrfs_next_leaf() unlocks the path. - The ordered extent completion runs, which converts the 4k-8k part of the prealloc extent to written and inserts the remaining prealloc part from 8k-12k. - btrfs_next_leaf() does a search and finds the new prealloc extent 8k-12k. - btrfs_log_prealloc_extents() copies the 8k-12k prealloc extent into the log tree. Note that it overlaps with the 4k-12k prealloc extent that was copied to the log tree by the first fsync. - fsync calls btrfs_log_changed_extents(), which tries to log the 4k-8k extent that was written. - This tries to drop the range 4k-8k in the log tree, which requires adjusting the start of the 4k-12k prealloc extent in the log tree to 8k. - btrfs_set_item_key_safe() sees that there is already an extent starting at 8k in the log tree and calls BUG(). Fix this by detecting when we're about to insert an overlapping file extent item in the log tree and truncating the part that would overlap. …play [ Upstream commit d182575 ] During inode logging (and log replay too), we are holding a transaction handle and we often need to call btrfs_iget(), which will read an inode from its subvolume btree if it's not loaded in memory and that results in allocating an inode with GFP_KERNEL semantics at the btrfs_alloc_inode() callback - and this may recurse into the filesystem in case we are under memory pressure and attempt to commit the current transaction, resulting in a deadlock since the logging (or log replay) task is holding a transaction handle open. Syzbot reported this with the following stack traces: WARNING: possible circular locking dependency detected 6.10.0-rc2-syzkaller-00361-g061d1af7b030 #0 Not tainted commit be346c1 upstream. The code in ocfs2_dio_end_io_write() estimates number of necessary transaction credits using ocfs2_calc_extend_credits(). This however does not take into account that the IO could be arbitrarily large and can contain arbitrary number of extents. Extent tree manipulations do often extend the current transaction but not in all of the cases. For example if we have only single block extents in the tree, ocfs2_mark_extent_written() will end up calling ocfs2_replace_extent_rec() all the time and we will never extend the current transaction and eventually exhaust all the transaction credits if the IO contains many single block extents. Once that happens a WARN_ON(jbd2_handle_buffer_credits(handle) <= 0) is triggered in jbd2_journal_dirty_metadata() and subsequently OCFS2 aborts in response to this error. This was actually triggered by one of our customers on a heavily fragmented OCFS2 filesystem. To fix the issue make sure the transaction always has enough credits for one extent insert before each call of ocfs2_mark_extent_written().
