You need to create a login and be included in the openmrs organisation. From the control panel, you can create SSH username and password.

To SSH a machine, use the full username. For example, if you created a SSH user in media temple 'user@openmrs.org', you can SSH the machine using ssh -l user@openmrs.org openmrs.org

There's FTP available, but no user can sudo into root. Patches and backups are automatically taken by mediatemple.
