Welcome to the savannahbudget.party wiki!

BudgetParty is based loosely off a similar React web application developed by Open Austin in 2017 as a way to include youth in budget deliberation processes. Given that Savannah doesn't take itself quite as seriously as most cities and always enjoys 'parties' –– as well as the fact that our use case is more for the purposes of inclusive engagement generally as part of CityCampSAV 2018 – we felt the name was apt.

Short-term feature additions

  • d3.js visualizations of the '/results' page.
  • Phone number verification via SMS (Twilio) to ensure one vote per resident.
  • Geolocation to auto-populate address, council district, etc.

Medium-term feature additions

  • Inclusion of conditional logic to account for various scenarios that would occur at different thresholds of cuts for various service departments.
  • Further enhancement of the simulation to fit game design principles (i.e. how do we make this more intrinsically rewarding with personas, achievements, emotional design).
  • More visible negative visual feedback when overbudgeting.

Longterm feature additions

  • Administrative dashboard in which city employees can update numbers without needing to know JavaScript.
  • Comprehensive curriculum development with SCCPS to utilize app in classroom settings.
