Here we are editing an incline,
20211002T224229
And no matter if we choose "up" or "down", nothing changes about the road display to help us be assured that our idea of "up" is the same as iD's, and not opposite.

For instance, the little triangles on the road could switch direction or something.

OK, maybe we are supposed to look at the direction of the triangle arrows, and report if they are going in the downward direction, as here.

The little triangles show the editing direction of the line. To show incline we would need another element, I am not sure if we really need that.

OK, checking
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:incline
and
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Forward_%26_backward,_left_%26_right
I am able to determine if indeed I want to say "up" or "down".

However with
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:barrier%3Dretaining_wall
iD adds some helpful bonus slope arrows.

So maybe the same could be done when editing an Incline.
