The only issue I see above is that the arc_meta_limit isn't being enforced and your maximum meta data in the arc was up to 3GiB for a while. Note this isn't harmful persay since the normal linux reclaim mechanisms will be able to reclaim that memory as needed, it's just not being self limited by the arc. This is a known issue when using a 3.1 kernel since the reworked the API to use per-super shrinkers. |

Any idea where 12GB of my RAM is? 1GB for firefox and may be 1GB for the rest of the desktop. 4GB in page cache. What else? Where is almost 7GB (6+1GB of swap) of RAM? Are the arcstats counters designed in a way that they can catch a leak? Or they are just representing what alloc/free calls the system thinks it went through? Why is the system swapping anyway? There is almost 1GB of stuff on the swap. And that's most likely firefox and desktop memory because kernel doesn't know anything about ZFS memory and possibly can't swap it out. There is no dedup active in the system. Why I think there is a leak is that it gets bad and bad with uptime. It continues to use more and more swap. 12GB is a LOT of ram! I hate the fact that it starts swapping after one day of uptime! |

One way to reproduce could be use a large dataset like a Ubuntu root filesystem and do a cat of every file in the filesystem to some dummy file in the filesystem. In a loop. For me, after the first boot, the first time it does rsync backup of my rootfs to my backup pool, it consumes almost 4GB. Some of it is recovered slowly but not all of it. Then, every day 10am (cron job for rsync) in the morning, it keeps on eating more RAM (but definitely not as drastic as first day). After couple of days, it starts to swap. |

One way for sure you check if there is a leak is to unmount the filesystems and unload the entire zfs/spl module stack. This will cause zfs to free every last bit of memory it's allocated and you should get all of your memory back. Additionally, zfs will generate a message on the console indicating if it has leaked any memory and if so how much. It just keeps a global count of malloc'ed and free'd bytes, but if there's an unmatched malloc (aka a leak) then it will report it. If doesn't complain then the memory wasn't leaked persay, it just isn't being reclaimed when you'ld like it to be. |

My guess would be memory fragmentation in the slab which is an issue we haven't yet seriously tackled. Internally ZFS makes heavy use a slab and one of the known side effects of using a slab is it can suffer from serious fragmentation issues unless steps are taken to effective repack the objects in the slabs. The arcstat's won't account for the overhead of memory fragmentation so it's possible to use more memory than you expect. There's been an issue open for a while to do exactly this but it hasn't been worked on yet. And frankly in the longer term (0.7.0 time frame) I want to move the Linux port away from depending so heavily on the slab entirely. It freed more than 5GB of memory. If it is fragmentation, its a BIG problem. Note that the 1.3Gig is sort of locked in cache because of tmpfs. "Sort of" because some of it may be swapped out because its dedicated to ccache and ccache is not used very often. But note how 355MB is swapped and that did not change with drop_caches. |

Alright, that's good to know since part of the fix for this will be add reworked logic to do targeted reclaim for the zfs filesystem when the ARC exceeds its defined limits. As for the swap space not decreasing, that's not unexpected. It won't be pulled back in to main memory until you attempt to access to memory which was swapped out. |

Using this revision for 3 days, no adverse effects. A lot of "data transfers", and nothing suspicious in memory usage (machine with 16GB of ram). But with some voluntary reboots between. |

Ditto on "good thing". Finally had a chance to test this with an overnight backup. Memory usage went from 1.6GB to 2.03GB. I can force drop-caches to get that down to 1.4GB but I'm expecting a 2GB arc anyway. Without this patch I stood a fairly good chance of the machine running out of memory.

I've merged the final version of the patch in to master. It includes all the original fixes plus a few more and some code clean up. I've tested this considerably before merging it but please let me know if you observe any lingering issues. |

The Linux 3.1 kernel has introduced the concept of per-filesystem shrinkers which are directly assoicated with a super block. Prior to this change there was one shared global shrinker. The zfs code relied on being able to call the global shrinker when the arc_meta_limit was exceeded. This would cause the VFS to drop references on a fraction of the dentries in the dcache. The ARC could then safely reclaim the memory used by these entries and honor the arc_meta_limit. Unfortunately, when per-filesystem shrinkers were added the old interfaces were made unavailable. This change adds support to use the new per-filesystem shrinker interface so we can continue to honor the arc_meta_limit. The major benefit of the new interface is that we can now target only the zfs filesystem for dentry and inode pruning. Thus we can minimize any impact on the caching of other filesystems. In the context of making this change several other important issues related to managing the ARC were addressed, they include: * The dnlc_reduce_cache() function which was called by the ARC to drop dentries for the Posix layer was replaced with a generic zfs_prune_t callback. The ZPL layer now registers a callback to drop these dentries removing a layering violation which dates back to the Solaris code. This callback can also be used by other ARC consumers such as Lustre. arc_add_prune_callback() arc_remove_prune_callback() * The arc_reduce_dnlc_percent module option has been changed to arc_meta_prune for clarity. The dnlc functions are specific to Solaris's VFS and have already been largely eliminated already. The replacement tunable now represents the number of bytes the prune callback will request when invoked. * Less aggressively invoke the prune callback. We used to call this whenever we exceeded the arc_meta_limit however that's not strictly correct since it results in over zeleous reclaim of dentries and inodes. It is now only called once the arc_meta_limit is exceeded and every effort has been made to evict other data from the ARC cache. * More promptly manage exceeding the arc_meta_limit. When reading meta data in to the cache if a buffer was unable to be recycled notify the arc_reclaim thread to invoke the required prune. * Added arcstat_prune kstat which is incremented when the ARC is forced to request that a consumer prune its cache. Remember this will only occur when the ARC has no other choice. If it can evict buffers safely without invoking the prune callback it will. * This change is also expected to resolve the unexpect collapses of the ARC cache. This would occur because when exceeded just the arc_meta_limit reclaim presure would be excerted on the arc_c value via arc_shrink(). invoke `zio_execute()` on raidz vdevs when aggregation I/Os are generated to improve aggregation continuity. These I/Os do not trigger any writes. However, it appears that they can be generated in such a way that they recurse infinitely upon return to `vdev_queue_io_to_issue()`. invoke `zio_execute()` on raidz vdevs when aggregation I/Os are generated to improve aggregation continuity. These I/Os do not trigger any writes. However, it appears that they can be generated in such a way that they recurse infinitely upon return to `vdev_queue_io_to_issue()`. We can detect long call chains and dispatch to another ZIO taskq. We cut in-line when we do this to minimize the potential for taskq exhaustion that can prevent a zio from notifying its parent. We can detect long call chains and dispatch to another ZIO taskq. We cut in-line when we do this to minimize the potential for taskq exhaustion that can prevent a zio from notifying its parent. We can detect long call chains and dispatch to another ZIO taskq. We cut in-line when we do this to minimize the potential for taskq exhaustion that can prevent a zio from notifying its parent. Under those circumstances, it was possible for a mix of noop I/Os for aggregation continuity and the I/O elevator to generate arbitrarily deep recursion. This patch modifies ZFS to propapage a recursion counter inside the zio_t objects such that IOs will be redispatched upon reaching a given recursion depth. We can detect long call chains and dispatch to another ZIO taskq. We cut in-line when we do this to minimize the potential for taskq exhaustion that can prevent a zio from notifying its parent. I don't know whether its the 3.1.1 issue or ZFS code issue, but after upgrading kernel to 3.1.1 from 2.6.39.4 and ZFS to master, I am starting to swap on a 12GB system with ARC set to 2GB, although swappiness is set to 0. I have rarely seen this (or any for that matter) system swap with swappiness set to 0.
