[Pro] New: Taxonomy Query for Loop Grids & Loop Carousels

We are excited to introduce another powerful tool for building Dynamic Content websites. Until now, you could use Loop Grids and Loop Carousels to consistently display products and posts with Loop Templates. With the Taxonomy Query, you can display your categories and tags as items in your Loop Grids and Carousels. For example, if you own a clothing store, you can use the Loop Grid to display different clothing taxonomies like "Shirts", "Pants", "Hats", and "Casual".

The Taxonomy Query is compatible with third-party plugins like CPT and ACF, allowing you to build beautiful loops for your custom post types. It also lets you filter items according to "Show All" or "Manual Selection". Choosing "Manual Selection" enables you to include and exclude different categories and tags from being displayed in your grid or carousel. When your query involves post taxonomies, you can filter them by depth for more control over which items are displayed. Additionally, you can choose to order post or product taxonomies in alphabetical or reverse alphabetical order.

How to Test It:

1. Verify your website has at least six categories in either posts or products.
2. Open a new page, Edit it with Elementor, and insert the Loop Grid widget.
3. Select a template type to create a post or product taxonomy template.
4. Use the "Create Template" button in the panel or the Editor’s edit mode to start the template.
5. Drag and drop any suitable widgets into the template area for your content.
6. Apply dynamic tags such as Archive Title, Category Image, and Archive Description, and ensure they are linked with the Archive URL.
7. Utilize ACF and CPT further to enrich the design and functionality of your template.
8. After finalizing the main item design, click the “Save & Back” yellow handle to save your template.
9. The loop should automatically populate other taxonomy items based on your main template design.
10. Adjust layout controls like Items Per Page, Masonry, and Equal Height according to your preference.
11. Verify that all controls and query options function correctly in the Query section.
12. Move to the Style tab to fine-tune the spacing between columns and the gap between rows.
13. Repeat the process for the Loop Carousel widget to ensure consistency.
14. Confirm that all settings and designs work correctly in the Editor and Frontend.

 

New: Optimize Control Loading for Improved Performance

Updating to version 3.21 significantly improves your website's performance. The Optimize Control Loading feature reduces the Time To First Byte (TTFB) metric by 20%-30%, which decreases the loading time for your visitors and boosts their engagement by providing a smoother browsing experience. The improvement is achieved by preventing unnecessary editor-related controls from loading when your website is rendered for visitors.

Activate “Optimize Control Loading” by going to WordPress Dashboard → Elementor → Features.

 

Additional Performance Updates

Lazy Load Background Images

New infrastructure supports lazy loading background images and improves existing functionality. This version uses a CSS native approach to lazy loading, by using media queries to detect when background images are below the fold, and lazy loads them accordingly. This also allows you to apply the “e-no-lazyload” label in the CSS Class input to disable lazy loading for a specific background image. The feature can only be used with Containers, and will be active by default on all new websites.

Activate “Lazy Load Background Images” by going to WordPress Dashboard → Elementor → Features.

Clean Code - Optimize Redundant Markup

Widgets with empty content areas and text boxes will stop creating unnecessary code like unnecessary divs which create longer code. For example, if you place an Icon Box without adding a description, the Widget won’t add an unnecessary div tag in your code, because it is empty.

If I understand this correctly, the problem still exists. Alignment controls are upside down in RTL. Please see the screenshot below.

@79ho3ein Thank you for reporting. We are aware of this issue, and we do have open tasks to fix these RTL issues in various choose controls. However, up until now these tasks had lower priority. I believe we will fix these issues when we fully migrate to CSS Logical Properties.

What is the difficulty in making a toggle switch that would disable background lazy loading, instead of specifying the "e-no-lazyload" class?

That's a great question @parfilov, and we might implement it in the future!

For now, we added this option as a workaround for users who really need to disable the background lazy-load. Most of the time this won't be needed though, as it should work correctly for most of use cases.

I've been testing the Taxonomy Query for Loop and I'm stuck:

1. I can only see Post Taxonomy which only shows my Categories and Tags or Product Taxomony which shows Product Categories. I couldn't query my Custom Post Types
2. I can only retrieve the Archive Title and Product Category Image. The Archive Meta only shows the value in the loop template editor but not on the frontend. I also couldn't work out how to use a third-party widget like JetEngine's Dynamic Field Widget.

Could someone please point me in the right direction?

• Using a Post Template in the Loop Grid, I can query my Events source as shown

• But the Post Taxonomy Template only shows Categories/Tags. Nothing for my Events CPT.

hi @Daveden2 I've tested again it and it seems to work for me - and yes - it's like said
I've used ACF to create CPT called 'Movies' and then (again using ACF) created a Taxonomy called 'Genere' (that will serve as my 'category' in the Movies CPT) then attached the CPT and also to Posts - that way the loop taxonomy can see it 👍

Make sure your CPT has the following settings:

• Public === true
• Exclude from Search === false
• Publicly Queryable === true
• Has Archive === true
• Show in Menus === true (Appearance > Menus)

Make sure your Custom Taxonomy has the following settings:

• Public === true
• Show In Admin Menu === true
• Show in Menus === true (Appearance > Menus)

Let us know if it works after confirming these settings are correctly defined.

Hi @jazir555,

We have no plans to include any settings for this functionality. That's why there is no option to disable lazy loading, and you need to add the class to the parent container manually.

The main reason why we chose it this way (among others) is:

Adding more settings and options would negate the reason to apply lazy-loading, since it would require a more complex solution that could potentially impact on performance.

However, if you think it is worth the trade-off, please do submit a new Feature Request and share it with us here, so we can consider it if there is enough demand for it from other users. 😉

Adding the setting wouldn't negate the reason to add lazy load, it would enhance it. My request was to add a px threshold for when the image should load as it approaches the viewport. A customizable value. The way I'm envisioning it, additional markup related to a manually set threshold px value is only applied when a value is manually set.

This would mean writing a much more complex script that would need to fetch and store the settings and listen to the changes in the page. This would stop being a simple script, to something that includes a lot of steps and overhead that could affect performance. This is a simple and hopefully infallible solution that is both performant and good for most use cases.

Optimize Image Loading

Optimize Image Loading was merged into the core. Have you considered it could negatively interfere with other optimisation plugins e.g. WP Rocket? Here's the respective info concerning the Optimised Image Loading taken from their Elementor compatibility page:

Elementor's feature is not compatibile with theirs, so you have basicaly decided, that we have to use your implementaton instead of theirs. Please let US decide, what to use and what when.

Same goes with the Background images and LazyLoad:

Yes, it's not in the core yet, but I have no doubts the merge is in the pipeline, no matter how far.

Notes

There's ZERO chance I will EVER use this feature on ANY web (and I'm sure I'm not the only one). Why should I have it enabled without any chance to disable it? It adds unnecessary and unwanted menu items which makes the UI cluttered. It could also confuse the clients who edit the pages and it could temp them to use it unwantedly. Again, please let US decide, what to use and what not.

Same goes with features like AI, Form Submissions (why should I have it turned on if the Form Widget is disabled) and many more.

Please, I beg you - add some kind of Feature Manager first, before you add them to the core! Something similar to the Widget Manager. And yes, this is not the first time I'm posting a request similar to this.

After a couple of updates, Elementor merges most of the features, under Elementor > Settings > Features, to the core so you'll no longer be able to disable them.

Hi @black-eye.

Experimental Features were introduced to allow for users and 3rd-party developers to adapt, and add compatibility to them in their own pace, as well as to allow everyone else to benefit from them earlier in their development, and to provide us with crucial feedback to better implement them.

We take backward compatibility very seriously, and wouldn't want to cause compatibility conflicts without giving users the option to disable these features to avoid them. We also understand that the Elementor environment is really complex, and sometimes we can't predict if a feature will work correctly in all use cases. Implementing experimental features is our way to ensure safe adoption.

Most of them, if not all were never meant to be optional. They were conceived to be part of the whole product once they are mature enough. You may not use them, and that's ok. Features like Notes for example have no impact on usage, load, or performance, and were designed to only be loaded when needed.

So to answer your question:

Unless we see a concrete necessity to activate/deactivate some features to avoid conflicts, most, if not all experimental features will eventually be merged to core permanently. This will allow us to improve our code, frameworks, and features further, and is essential to Elementor's growth and evolution. I hope you can understand!

Hello, unfortunately the Hints:: API (elementor/core/utils/hints.php) still does not contain any filter which would allow to disable the (useless) hints about the Image Optimization plugin.
My clients keep installing this plugin because of these Ads in Elementor, but there is already another image optimization plugin installed...

Changes to this API were not part of this release. The hints for the Image Optimizer plugin only show once if they are dismissed, and only for admin users.

If you wish this to be a feature, please submit a new Feature Request and we will consider it if there is enough demand from other users.
