Consolidate linting and formatting in examples #586

Some of the examples have their own formatting and lint rules (or turn the lint rules off). We should:

[ ] Not turn off lint rules in the examples
[ ] Use the primary lint and format rules everywhere
[ ] Remove the lint and format rules from the examples

This is related to the migration to eslint that is discussed in #528.

[ ] Also, linting is no longer enabled in V3, which needs to be fixed before V3 can be merged (see #584)
