This prevents MathJax from processing table contents:

I'm hoping for a code review, to find out if this might be accepted. If so, I'll add the tests/docs.

  • closes #19824
  • tests added / passed
  • passes git diff upstream/master -u -- "*.py" | flake8 --diff
  • whatsnew entry

@davidchall : Thanks for the PR! For future reference, you should probably wait for us to weigh in on your filed issue before opening a PR. That's where we would "accept" the idea or not.

Once it's at the PR stage, we will not accept the changes until you add the documentation and tests.

rather than an option prefer this to be an options as @TomAugspurger discussed in the orgiinal issue, and IIRC this should only be handled in the to_html, and NOT in the styler

@davidchall davidchall changed the title from ENH: Add Styler.disable_mathjax() method (#19824). to ENH: Add option to disable MathJax (#19824). Feb 24, 2018

@TomAugspurger

Thanks, your approach seems reasonable.

As far as testing goes, could you add one that calls _repr_html_ with the default and in a context manager with this set to false. Then you can assert that tex2jax_ignore is or isn't in the output.

Also we'll want to add a release note.

There are 148 matches across 41 files for IPython (case sensitive). Not all of these need changing – it's quite nuanced. This is probably better left for a separate PR.

With regards to this PR, shall I use Jupyter or IPython when documenting this new option?

@davidchall

I think the reason it is not in HTMLFormatter is that MathJax is a feature of the Jupyter environment, and so this is specific to _repr_html_. See #19824 (comment).

I agree that this should apply to Series too.

@jreback @TomAugspurger

Series doesn't actually have a _repr_html_ method right now. Now that I've explored the code a bit more, I think I agree with @jreback that this new logic should instead go in HTMLFormatter. If Series were given a _repr_html_ method then it would probably use HTMLFormatter, so would automatically get this new logic.

However, I have noticed that Styler._repr_html_() uses a completely separate set of logic from DataFrame._repr_html_(). This means that the new display.html.use_mathjax option is not respected when using df.style. There it seems that the class="tex2jax_ignore" would need to be injected into the table_attributes variable. Any thoughts on this?

Hmmm, I'm not sure about the option affecting Styler. Does anyone else (@jorisvandenbossche, @chris-b1) have thoughts?

Adding classes to the Styler is pretty easy, and you're always able to add them since you're generating the Styler. With DataFrame._repr_html, you don't have that option.

@davidchall

davidchall Mar 1, 2018

It's true this issue is solved by df.style.set_table_attributes('class="tex2jax_ignore"'). One could argue that this PR is unnecessary because the solution is already possible in pandas.

But this solution requires knowledge of how MathJax works – something that I've learnt whilst making this PR. The new option display.html.use_mathjax is there to make it easier for users to find the solution.

To be clear, the changes to frames repr html are great.

I just worry about injecting “noise” into Styler’s generated HTML from a config option, when it’s relatively easy to do that yourself.

That said, an extra class isn’t the worst thing in the world, and it’s simple to toggle on and off. Your current PR is probably fine.

chris-b1 Mar 1, 2018

Yeah, I could see the argument for not doing it in Styler but I agree the PR is fine, especially where it is off by default, and is sort of an obscure thing to look up.
