You may want to consider using the new universal analytics code provided by google. Note that this will only work for Universal Analytics accounts, so it could break existing analytics and may instead need to coexist with the old code as well.

If the tracking id is like 'UA-*' you can use the google universal analytics code if not, take the old. (or did I misunderstood the introduction to analytics.js? ;) )

Is this not something that is best coming from the Octopress repo rather than a theme amendment?
