Importing Gazetteers

Rainer Simon edited this page Apr 10, 2019 · 33 revisions

In order to use geo-annotation functionality, you need to import one or more gazetteers via the Authority Management page, located at /admin/authorities. Log in as a user with administrator privileges to access this page (e.g. the initial 'recogito' user).

Note: importing a gazetteer can take a while, and the Authority Management page doesn't currently show import progress. For the time being, you can track progress by manually refreshing the page.

Where to find gazetteer data files

Recogito supports upload of data files primarily in two formats:

  1. Pelagios Gazetteer Interconnection Format
  2. Linked Places Format (note: when uploading a Linked Places file, include the string "lpf" in its name, otherwise Recogito won't currently pick the right importer)

At the moment, the following gazetteers are available in one of the two formats:

In addition, we are maintaining a number of custom-built gazetteer packages that are also compatible with Recogito:

  • A package based on the Pleiades Gazetteer of the Ancient World is available here. The package is built from Pleiades' nightly data dumps, but includes a few modifications specifically for use with Recogito (such as additional polygon region geometries).

  • A package built from a subset of GeoNames is available here.

Check back occasionally on this page for updates or new gazetteer packages - or contact us if you want to make your own gazetteer available for use with Recogito.
