PHP 8 as a requirement #7630
Comments
I would like to note switching to PHP 8 might not be acceptable for agencies providing Pimcore to their clients. In our case we are hosting on Ubuntu LTS versions to reduce the number of major migrations and guarantee a secure platform. For our hosting this would mean we can support PHP 8, and thus Pimcore X, starting April 2022. Of course it is possible to install PHP 8 using 3rd party mirrors. Though those mirrors do contain an implicit, and sometimes even explicit, disclaimer. One of them reading:
As Pimcore is often by professional organizations I think we can all agree a security risk due to reliability on a 3rd party mirror is not an acceptable scenario. Adding to this I would also like to note these upgrades result in additional overhead, and cost, for our clients. From a maintenance and security perspective I would like to suggest to investigate the possibility to stick to PHP 7.4 |
If you care about LTS, you should care about Pimcore LTS, which is not available in a Community Edition. So you also have to get the Enterprise Extension and use 6.8 until you can run Pimcore X on Ubuntu LTS. |
