Optional Manual Update Process

Follow these steps to manually update the portapps Brave browser when this projects official release is delayed

Notice

  • Download the self-extracting archive "brave_installer-x64.exe" direct from Brave's server
  • Don't run the self-extracting app
  • Instead use an archive app (like 7zip, PeaZip, etc.) to open "brave_installer-x64.exe" and extract the "chrome.7z" file inside

extract

  • Use your archive app to extract "chrome.7z" to a folder named "chrome"
  • Open the subfolder '\Chrome-bin' inside "chrome" e.g. "chrome\Chrome-bin"
  • Close your portapps Brave browser
  • Locate and open the your portapps Brave folder
  • Inside that folder, open the subfolder '\app'.
  • Delete all the outdated content (two files and one folder) inside the '\app' subfolder.
  • replace the files with the content of subfolder '\Chrome-bin' (two files and one folder)

Brave Steps

Restart your manually updated portapps Brave browser

Note
I've used this method to update twice successfully.
Replace the "app" folder content only! Leave everything else alone!

Acknowledgements

  • Thanks CrazyMax for all your portable apps
  • Thanks @greatwolf for better manual update instructions and for finding the Brave developers download source

==Probably pointless download mirror==

  • Look for the latest portable version on the website: Brave Browser Portable - Download - COMPUTER BILD
  • Confirm this is the newest build by looking at the "Spezifikationen" or "Specifications" section on the webpage
  • Download the compressed computerbild archive: Brave_Portable_x86_x64.zip
  • Open the computerbild archive
  • Use the contents inside the x64 subfolder '\brave-v1.XX.XXX-win32-x64' to update the '\app' subfolder in your portapps Brave folder

It's better to follow my procedure here: #129 (comment)

Since its download source is from brave.com itself rather than some unknown website.

I agree. Your procedure is clear enough and the brave download source is better than mine.
The problem was that your post was a buried in a reply to a "closed as completed" issue and so not so easy to find. Not so easy for me to find anyway.
"Computer Bild first published in 1996" is the German equivalent to PCMag first published from 1982.
If anyone is interested, I did a hash compare between the brave developers files and the COMPUTER BILD files and they were identical.

I'm going to suggest (via pull request) that your procedure get incorporated into this projects readme.

Having the manual portapps Brave updating instructions in the README keeps them from getting lost in the "Issues" section.
Please see portapps#134 (comment) for details and contributors to the wording.
