macOS and Linux osu! installer #1030
Comments
This is a zero-priority task for now. |
You generally don't use installers on Linux, but it's possible (and easy on some distros) to create packages. A debian/ubuntu package and a |
Custom installer way better than creating infinite amount of packages for different package managers, as all that osu required is to put to PATH dir osu!lazer shell script + some configs(for mime types). |
Generally using the package manager is the best way to install packages on
*nix and in reality we're really only going to need RPM and DEB packages, 2

Fogot Gentoo with their package system, Slackware, *BSD. Arch as always, what a nice package system, contributor even fix mime identification. |
But most of these other distros have a less "newbie" userbase and good
means of making 3rd party packages (Arch already has a package, Gentoo,
Void, Slackware, BSDs). By supplying even just a DEB package you're
covering a large enough userbase (Steam, for example, only supports
Ubuntu). Theoretically you could use the DEB package to make packages for
other distros (either by extracting the DEB file in a PKGBUILD/any other
build script or by using alien if it works for DEB -> RPM conversion)

The AUR package is not official and will likely be replaced/removed going forward. This topic is not open for discussion currently, so I'm going to lock this for now. Please help finish the game instead. |
Currently there aren't any osu! installers for macOS and Linux, and people has to run nuget under mono to install the osu! package, which prevents people from reporting problems on macOS and Linux. We should release installer programs for these platforms.
Also, to keep these installers slim we might consider not including the nuget package inside installers, but instead download the package when the installer is executed.
