Sometimes after sleep the keyboard backlight does not turn on. I can't say exactly from which version this started to happen, but it's pretty recent. It might correlate with the 12.1.56 beta which is mentioned in this issue #1675.

Downgrading to 12.1.0 resolves the issue.

I can confirm this bug, after downgrading to the official non-beta version the keyboard backlight is okay now.

Same here - it was driving me nuts and I was considering bringing my macbook for a repair, but then I started turning all apps that utilize keyboard off and voila. It's interesting how Karabiner is able to interfere with the backlight at all?

Can anyone confirm this is fixed in 12.2.0? I've been prompt to update. Without confirming there's no regression, I'm going to skip the update for now.

AFAIK it has not been fixed. It was not part of the release notes, and this issue is still open.

Thanks for letting me know.

The bug appears to be in 12.1.xxx Beta as you reported. I can confirm backlight works fine after sleep in stable 12.1.0 (version I'm using), so it's introduced between 12.1.0 and 12.2.0. I think it's safe to skip 12.2 then.

what about after the new mojave updates?

Could you point to something more specific that would be related to this particular issue?

I have the same problem, very annoying. Karabiner v12.2.0, Mojave 10.14.3 on a 2018 Macbook Pro 15 inch.

Same issue for me. 2018 MBP 15 inch, Mojave 10.14.3. Karabiner-Elements 12.2.0

After waking from sleep just now, I noticed that the keyboard backlight wasn't working. I quit Karabiner but then found the keyboard didn't work at all. Unresponsive to keypresses and the caps-lock light was dead. I ran Karabiner again and the keyboard works again.

The backlight remains not working since the machine woke from sleep. I think i've noticed this since last Mojave update but can't be sure. I have to reboot to get the backlight working again.

I'm having the exact same symptoms as @davfox . Keyboard also unresponsive after trying to quit to fix the backlight.

Same behavior for me: keyboard backlight doesn't work, quitting Karabiner will fix issue but often will cause the keyboard to become non-functional until I reboot.

Same here! I just got my laptop replaced by Apple because I thought that the keyboard backlighting was broken (The laptop was only 3 weeks old). Glad I have finally tracked down the issue 👍

I'm experiencing the exact same issue. The keyboard doesn't respond whatsoever when I quit karabiner and than starts working again after restarting it.

I'm affected by the exact same issue as described by everyone above.

Karabiner 12.2.0
macOS 10.14.3
2018 15" MBP

The only solutions right now are to either (1) stop using Karabiner entirely or (2) reboot every time after wake from sleep to get the backlighting back.

I think we have plenty of reports now stating more or less the same thing. Perhaps a thumbs up on the original problem statement is enough now, if you have the same problem?

I downgraded to version 12.1.0 on my MBP 13" 10.14.3 a few days ago and so far I haven't had the issue anymore.

You are correct 12.1.0 works fine apart from the caps lock LED not showing. I can live without that LED

I'm effected by this issue as well— uninstalling for now & keeping watch for an update.

You can download past versions of Karabiner from this page on their site to revert (click the download button next to 12.1): https://pqrs.org/osx/karabiner/history.html

Same issue here, macbook pro 2018 (touchbar), mojave 10.14.3

Just one additional data point here. I can reproduce this issue consistently on a 2018 MBP with a touchbar using 12.2.0 but on a 2015 MBP I don't see the problem at all. Downgrading the 2018 MBP to the lates 12.1 resolved the issue on that computer.

If I can help debugging this issue please let me know!

I have the same issue what @davfox described (#1676 (comment))

I have a MBPro 15'' 2018 with macOS 10.14.4

Caps lock led works fine.
Backlight can not be turned on and it does not turn on automatically.
Quitting Karabiner makes my keyboard unresponsive, but does not help with the backlight issue.

Still broken in 12.6.0 on 10.14.6

Can confirm that rolling back to 12.3.0 and the backlight works after waking from sleep.
