auto-listing of barnstars on /barnstars & compact display on /profile/

Two design issues brought up by Chris Fastie:

1. how will the new barnstar system be displayed on /barnstars? How will legacy barnstars be displayed?
2. can barnstars be displayed more compactly on profile pages, and include custom graphics (if extant)?

Additional: how can offline stuff like "feeding the barnraisers" be captured in the new system which currently requires a research note to be posted before a barnstar can be awarded?

What does point 2 mean, more specifically? Does it mean custom artwork for an individual's version of a mass awarded barnstar? e.g. Fastie customizes his Classic Barnstar with fall leaves, while the rest of us maintain the classic Classic Barnstar. Does it mean custom artwork as in the barnstar's artwork (which is by some definitions custom, since every barnstar is unique).

To my knowledge, the example of @cfastie leaf barnstar was purely for sake of discussion. If, by some manner of kismet, this were to have actually happened, then I too would like to see the link! ;)
