When doing asynchronous triggering:

Pusher['a_channel'].trigger_async('an_event', {
  :some => 'data'
}

Listening for events on the channel looks like:

var pusher  = new Pusher('<%= Pusher.key %>'); // uses your API KEY
var channel = pusher.subscribe('a_channel');

channel.bind('an_event', function(data) {
  alert('foobar');
});

Will the listening part block a typical web application by using a single thread, or will it do it asynchronously as well?

It's asynchronous, as you'd expect!
