Note, this PR is built on #68 and thus only the last commit 6d7976c is relevant, but it depends on #68 being merged.

Github detected that the target branch was merged into main, so then made main the target branch for this PR. Very smart.

As I mentioned in #68, I'm proceeding with this patch to enable experimentation, but I still welcome feedback.

@jaraco I found this today after trying to track down a build bug for modules on SmartOS. The addition of the _distutils_system_mod.py in the sys.path makes those builds succeed again with python 3.8, 3.9, and 3.10 installed by pkgsrc.
