pip fails to install from ftp

I don't know if it is supposed to handle ftp, but it would be nice if it did. I am getting:

raise InvalidSchema("No connection adapters were found for '%s'" % url)
InvalidSchema: No connection adapters were found for 'ftp://xmlsoft.org/libxml2/python/libxml2-python-2.6.21.tar.gz'
