should we keep showing the extent (the operation seems obvious to me without it but...)? No risk to think it's part of output? And what about keeping it red if we still display it?

It is obvious to me without it too but I find that people new to the concepts and not as inclined to spatial thinking have a harder time. I went with the dashed gray because that was the graphic language I established on the rest of the overlay images. Yes they might think it is included but I think that is worth the risk.
