Unable to install Ruby 3.2.0

So I run

rbenv install 3.2.0
rbenv global 3.2.0

and this is the error I get

I can confirm that on my Mac OS 13.1, I am able to install Ruby 3.2.0 while only having libyaml installed using brew. Do you have an older OS? That could definitely be the culprit.

M1 MBP on 13.1 Here - I had to do the same after finding that libyaml-devel was not available. Crucial note, I had to set:

export CFLAGS="-Wno-error=implicit-function-declaration"

in order for this to work. The reason for that appeared to be related to compilers finding libffi which was apparent in this message:

libffi is keg-only, which means it was not symlinked into /opt/homebrew,
because macOS already provides this software and installing another version in
parallel can cause all kinds of trouble.

For compilers to find libffi you may need to set:
  export LDFLAGS="-L/opt/homebrew/opt/libffi/lib"
  export CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/homebrew/opt/libffi/include"

ruby-3.2.0/lib/yaml.rb require 'psych' so rbenv install 3.2.0 without libyaml is a failure

instead rbenv install 3.1.3 is a success

I had the same issue on CentOS, and running sudo dnf install libyaml-devel resolved the problem. libyaml alone was not enough. Needed to install libyaml-devel.

I had the same issue, maybe useful to someone: Add psych to your gemfile, and specify the version to be below 4, because v4 has a bug.

Add to gemfile:

gem 'psych', '< 4'

Then run bundle install. That fixed it for me.

In fedora I just need to update ruby-build:

git pull
rbenv install --list
rbenv install 3.2.0

Running this command before the installation of ruby 3.2.0 worked for me in Ubuntu 22.04:

Using Mint 21.1 can confirm that this worked. I just installed 3.2.1.

kept failing as well for me, it was hard to look at the log, because its running on docker build.
using ubuntu 20.04, installing libyaml-dev fixed the issue with 3.2.x

If you run into this problem on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, you have to install the following packages:

• dnf install libyaml
• rpm -i https://mirror.stream.centos.org/9-stream/CRB/x86_64/os/Packages/libyaml-devel-0.2.5-7.el9.x86_64.rpm

Note this will install libyaml-devel from the CentOS Stream 9 repository, as it is not available on RHEL.
