Error when xcode is in a external disk with space on path

Title was a bit self explaing, but lets go

I have a external 256G ssd and default 1TB internal HD on Mac
My HD is named "Macintosh HD" and for reasons that XCode has 23G and ssd is almost full, i put it on this HD

With this scenario i run rbenv

$ rbenv install 3.3.0

Thanks for reporting. While there is a chance that it is ruby-build specifically that doesn't handle spaces in paths, I think it's more likely that the ./configure process of Ruby itself doesn't handle when build tools were found in a location that has spaces in path. To confirm that, you could download a Ruby 3.3 tarball directly, extract it, and run ./configure --prefix=/tmp/path/to/ruby-3.3 there.

If so, this is a bug in Ruby's own source code and should be reported there. @hsbt: Do you know of a known issue regarding build tools found in a location with spaces?

"Macintosh HD" is the default hard drive name, and for most people, Xcode is installed inside that hard drive. On a clean macOS setup, this doesn't cause problems. My guess is that you set an environment variable and/or the Xcode path to /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer instead of just /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer

You can check the current path with this command:

xcode-select -p

You can check all the env vars with env.

If the Xcode path is wrong, you can fix it like this:

sudo xcode-select -s /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer

I tried to reproduce this by running sudo xcode-select -s /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer, but I was able to install Ruby 3.3.0 fine using my Ruby on Mac product. So, maybe something else is going on in your case, like an env var or other dev setup issue.

Unfortunally that is not the case, i keep the name "Macintosh HD" for the default harddrive that comes builtin on mac, but my main hard drive is an external SSD pluged via usb.

For the reason XCode is huge and ssd are running out of space, i put XCode on the "Macintosh HD" this is the reason xcode select point to /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer
