Verification Example 05
Download Example 5 model (v2.7.0)
Description
This example describes how to model the partial fixity end releases in GiD+OpenSees. The model consists of a cantilever beam subjected to a uniform load. At the fixed end of the frame element the partial fixity moment (Mz) and shear (Vy) springs have been assigned. The vertical tip deflection of the cantilever obtained with the FE analysis program GiD+OpenSees is compared with SeismoStruct calculations. The FE models lie in the X-Y plane.
Geometry and Properties
Material Properties:
E = 29.783868 GPa
G = 12.409945 GPa
Section Properties:
A = 0.3048 m2
I = 0.01686 m4
Note: An element distributed load equal to 16.41 kN/m is applied on the members
Modeling and Loading
The partial fixity moment and shear springs are modeled by using a link element, which is characterized by a stiffness value k = 94564 kN/m in F3 and k = 439263 kN-m/rad in M2 respectively, both with a linear symmetric response curve. The other degrees-of-freedom are considered infinitely stiff.
The FE model is shown below:
Analysis Type
Static analysis (with geometric nonlinearities disabled)
