Description:

We missed this case when introducing the new plugins layout.

As a bonus, I added a few minor improvements and refactoring to this option.

Fixes #3971.

Tasks:

  • Describe the problem / feature
  • Write tests
  • Write code to solve the problem
  • Get code review from coworkers / friends

I will abide by the code of conduct.

Can this be backported for 3.2?

Yes, I hope that we include all unreleased bug fixes in the final 3.2 release.
