Pervasive has a negative connotation to it and this makes it sound like the book is suggesting we don't want to write functions - which isn't something we want to say!

A better word, without the negative connotation would be "prevalent".

I and Merriam-Webster disagree that pervasive is always negative, but I also don't mind prevalent :) Thanks!
