Preparing the game data

Linux

CD version

For this you'll require the 2 CD version and "unshield" (tool to extract InstallShield setup files).

On disc 1 (Install Disc) you'll have data1.hdr, data1.cab and data2.cab. Extract those using

unshield x data1.cab

This will automaticly use data1.hdr and data2.cab, too. The installed files can be found in the "App_Executables" folder. You can delete all other extracted folders.

On disc 2 (Play Disc) you'll have an audio folder (which contains the Radio Stations and more files). Copy all files from that Audio folder into the extracted audio folder within "App_Executables".

Steam Play Proton version

For this version you need to buy the game on Steam, and set the path of the game files to ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Grand Theft Auto 3 use Configuration to serve as a guide to this, save game data are located in ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/12100/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/

Virtual machines

When building in a Linux virtual machine running on Windows, it's enough to simply create a shared folder and copy the Windows GTA 3 installation into it.

Windows

The recommended way to extract the disc for windows is to install the game from disc.

Steam Version

The Steam Version of GTA3 is similar to the disc version. You can find the unpacked game data in your Steam's directory (usually C:\Program files(x86)\Steam or C:\Program files\Steam) subfolder \Steamapps\Common\grand theft auto 3. That directory can be used directly for OpenRW.
