Problem statement

The phase 1 data scheme that we utilized for the initial Acartia.io prototype has quite a few limitations:

  1. The field names are not all agnostic to the format of the data (e.g. photo_url could be media_url or media_urls)
  2. There is no easy way to group observations (e.g. labels for killer whale groups like ecotype, pod, or matriline)
  3. There is no field for capturing the identity of individual animals (e.g. from a photograph or pigmentation or fin shape)
  4. There is no direction field (because we assumed, and maybe still should assume, that direction could be computed from adjacent data points in a track)...
