sdkman installs but won't run in linux mint 18 xfce #471

After installing and following the output instructions I run sdk version and get the following

_sdk- [error opening dir]
_ [error opening dir]

Tested on Linux Mint 17.3 and it works fine

Please ensure that your shell is set to be bash, not sh.

How do I tell if my shell is set to bash and not sh? I'm using xfce terminal.

Ok it's set to bash - verified using echo $0 and I'm still having the same issue on all 3 of my machines - 2 Linux Mint 18.2 and 1 Linux Mint 18.1. Any ideas? I really want to use Sdkman.
