Is there a way to run a function in asynchronous mode? #180

My function in R can take up to 10 minutes running and the results are pasted in an Excel sheet so I don't have a need for Excel to wait for the whole 10 minutes.
Is there a way that I can call/run the function in R but immediately free Excel from waiting for R to finish?
I am thinking of a "do events" from VBA code but that doesn't work.
