Further investigation concluded that SimplePie cannot handle the default rss 2.0 namespace (http://backend.userland.com/rss2). Removing this xmlns before parsing theffed, solves the issue, but it is a hack.
Technically, RSS 2.0 doesn't have a namespace. This is most likely a huge pain in the ass to fix (we'll need a new SIMPLEPIE_NAMESPACE_RSS_20_WRONG everywhere that has SIMPLEPIE_NAMESPACE_RSS_20 will need a corresponding check of SIMPLEPIE_NAMESPACE_RSS_20_WRONG).
I'm almost willing to call this a wontfix and just say that if you're going to use a broken spec, expect brokenness. However, for pragmatic purposes, scheduling for Future.
