How to run karma/naughty?

Hi,

I have someone trying to brute-force an email account password, and I'd like to use the karma/naughty plug-ins.
In the database I have >9000 IPs and 277222 connects, but the other columns (Penalty, Naughty, Nice, and Hostname) remain essentially empty. 3 IPs have a number in Nice, none in Naughty.

I've read through the header documentation in both plug-ins, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Any ideas what I'm missing, or any pointers to further documentation?
