Serge suggested this in the discussion about name suggestions and I think it's worth considering. Full details here, but I'll summarize.

Right now a user creates an object -> searches for and selects a preset based on a category (restaurant, park, church) -> and can enter a name. What if we made it possible for them to create an object -> search for a common name (like McDonalds, Walmart, Starbucks) and select that preset -> which fills in a bunch of information common to all McDonalds.

This does a couple good things:

  • quicker entry for very common features
  • encourages correct tagging
  • helps expose more tagging possibilities by example

My concerns:

  • might confuse users, too much being entered too quickly for them
  • how do we differentiate between category presets and 'quick add' name presets?

My full thoughts here but I think it's worth trying out, some day.

I use something similar to this in JOSM, I have presets for a number of common stores that I frequently enter (e.g. McDonald's, gas stations brands, etc). It's region specific since it's based on what I map

I researched each preset before creating it.

I think this is a great idea. Providing it doesn't bloat the end package too much, I think auto-generating a bunch of presets using the name index is a good approach.

I recall xjjk having created software that generates a webpage on statistics for a particular name value - e.g. name=McDonald's. It pulled the data from xapi, so was moderately resource intensive.
