Welcome to the 2021 Women in AI Workshop 1! 😃

We're so excited to have you learn and grow in an rapidly evolving and ever important field.

Women in Tech have been historically underrepresented, with women making up 25% of the global Tech workforce in a variety of different roles, even though women making up almost half of the total workforce. What's worse is that number is lower than the percentage of Tech roles held by women back in the 1980s. In Australia, that number is slowly increasing from 24% in 2018 to 28% in 2020, according to the Australian Federal Government's May 2021 report on women in STEM.

Despite the challenges, women have contributed significant and numerous breakthroughs that have been vital to the Tech Industry. From Ada Lovelace to Elaine Denniston, from Kirthiga Reddy to Fei-Fei Li - we are here to stand on the shoulders of giants. You are the future of the Tech Industry and there is nothing that you can't do if you set your mind to it. There have been and will be many female technology trailblazers and we're excited to be part of your learning journey with you. 🌱 👩‍💻

Everyone starts somewhere when they begin their technical journey, and today we'll be going through the first workshop in the series. It will feature both conceptual and practical elements and focused on the fundamentals that underpin Cloud Computing and Microsoft Azure, the world's computer.

Simply put, cloud computing is the delivery of computing services—including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence—over the Internet (“the Cloud”) to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale. You typically pay only for cloud services you use, helping you lower your operating costs, run your infrastructure more efficiently, and scale as a business changes.

Workshop

  • Our workshop will cover 3 short, sharp and easy to understand 15 minute Get-to-Know sections.
  • By the end of the 2 hours, you will be able to:
    • Understand what Azure is, the benefits of cloud computing and the smart economics behind it that motivates big companies to move to Azure and other cloud providers ☁️
    • Explain the difference between IaaS vs PaaS vs SaaS 🤔
    • Know the different types of Azure Compute, what Compute is and more practically, how we cost optimise and manage our Azure Compute resources 🖥️💸
    • Understand the importance of data storage in Azure, what we can do with storage, why it matters and how we ensure privacy and security of our data (really important topic that lends in Cyber Security) 💽🔐
    • Articulate the value of an Azure Fundamentals Certification 😉

Hands-on Lab

  • 3 hands-on labs for 15 minutes each, where you will:
    • Create a WordPress website and host it in Azure
    • Flex your scripting language skills by provisioning a virtual machine from Azure Cloud Shell and explore other Azure Compute types
    • Provision an Azure SQL Database, query the data and explore for insights
