Oh and some of the common local rock types that I miss are:

  • chert (sedimentary)
  • serpentinite (metamorphic)
  • breccia (igneous).

From Harold Jun 26 email:

So, within the new main-group "Rock Type: Hydrothermal and Metasomatic" simply list

  • Quartz (Hydrothermal and Metasomatic)

Hey Simon, Brendan,

thank you for invitation.

I am interested in improvement of rock type tags too.
I think it's interesting and the rock in general already supplys an idea of how to climb there. (Otherwise it males curious to find out). Additionally I'm Geologist :)

At first, when I started, I tended to include most of the rocks to very general types. However, as more as I consider ... After all it does not really matter how long the lists are.

So finally I tried on a realistic basis to list and sort all climbable rock types. That means I did not include very special rocks which e.g. hardly are accessible or only can be climbed in a very fresh state or exist only twice on the planet, only in underground mines or only as very thin layers.

I agree that chert and serpentinite are two rock types which should be added. As Geologist, I would suggest not to use beccia (igneous) but agglomerate. Would that be fine with you?

However, to my own surprise there are a lot more of rock types which indeed are used by climbers :)

Here are the results:

  1. Sedimentary (2 new. See *)
    (Sedimentary)
    Limestone
    Dolomite
    Sandstone
    Gritstone
    Greywacke
    Conglomerate
    *Arkose
    *Chert
  2. Metamorphic (4 new. See *)
    (Metamorphic)
    Gneiss
    Schist
    Marble
    Quartzite
    *Serpentinite
    *Amphibolite
    *Greenschist
    *Hornfels
  3. Igneous (11 new and 1 remark. See *)
    (Igneous)

*Anorthosit
*Peridotite
*Gabbro
*Diorite
*Tonalite
*Syenite
*Granodiorit
Granite

_Andesite
*Trachyte
*Tephrite
*Phonolite
Basalt
Dolerite/_Diabase
Ignimbrite
Rhyolite
Tuff
Agglomerate

*4. Hydrothermal and Metasomatic (completely new)
(Hydrothermal and Metasomatic)
Quartz

What do you think?
I'm open for improvements and I think I could supply an example for each one - if necessary :)

Best regards
Harald from Germany

This is awesome feedback. We will add these.

Actually I think there is human interest in getting together an article showing each rock type. If you are up to it, I would love to take you up on the offer.

What would you like to have? One possibility is to keep the thecrag info about rocktypes as short as possible and additionally to supply links to agreeable wikipedia articles. I will consider and supply an example :) Good night. It's midnight in Germany.

I was thinking of a site article with a climbers description of what it is like to climb each type of rock, maybe with a photo or link to wikipedia. Would also be good to list some classic crag examples for each.

No rush with this.

A few random thoughts:

Each rock type should have a color, I'm thinking of showing a world map with each cluster color coded by rock type similar to proposed grade and style. Would be cool to see the trends and mountain ranges etc

Each type should just have a chunk of markdown which can then contain links to wherever. Think we already have this in place

Definitely should make sure that each type is used by a few crags and we can automatically show the most classic crags of that type.

I can see a great article with all the details and stats similar to the grade page. No of routes for each type. Average quality and grades of routes.

As you can generate a search based on tags (up to now without the rock
type tag) this partly will be done automatically, as soon as each rock type
is in use!?

I have updated the website tag configurion. @flugrost could you please review in case I missed something. I note that there were only 10 * new Igneous tags not 11.

@flugrost
Copy link

Nearly perfect. Thank you :)

Under "Igneous Rocks", two types only are missing:

What Simon named "igneous breccia" is covered by "Agglomerate". Indeed it's an own type despite the components e.g. might consist of basalt only. That's because of the parallel use of basalt for a composition of Minerals and a rock type :)

Under "Hydrothermal and Metasomatic" similarily to the other types I would suggest also to list the "headline type" again
"Hydrothermal and Metasomatic" as than this could be choosen for everything else but "Quartz"

@flugrost
Copy link

Hi, tried to add at least one crack to each rock type. Started with 'Sedimentary Rocks':
I'm not sure with respect to climbing spots in Arkose and I do not know climbing spots in cherts.
Here is the list:
+++Limestone - Wilder Kaiser
++++Dolomite - Wilder Kaiser
++++Sandstone - Bessenbach
++++Gritstone - The roaches (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_climbing_in_the_Peak_District#Gritstone)
++++Greywacke - Bocksberg
++++Conglomerate - Montserat, Meteora
++Arkose - ((Uluru)) ((Fountain Formation-Flatirons))
Chert

@flugrost
Copy link

And here 'Hydrothermal and Metasomatic':
++++Quartz - Göthefelsen, Borstein, Pfahl

To be continued with other rock types :)

@flugrost
Copy link

Please add "slate" to 'Metamorphic rocks'. Indeed, I know one (see below)

++++Gneiss - Ponte Brolla
Schist (mostly connected with gneiss, surely routes in the Alps)
++Marble - ((Cararra))
++++Quartzite - Wheeler Peak
++++Serpentinite - Keller Rangen
++++Amphibolite - Großes Grünhorn
++++Greenschist - Lorsbacher Wand
Hornfels
+++Slate - http://www.thecrag.com/climbing/germany/saaletal/area/128465595

Harald, I have made the three further config changes you suggested.

This is where it gets more exciting. I have granted you global permissions so you can update these details to any crag around the world so you can update an example of each type without involving us.

Do you use Google docs? I am thinking we could collaborate (actually mainly you) in writing an article to be published on theCrag about rock types from a climbers perspective. We would put your name to it as an authoritative source. For example limestone can have sharp edges that can cut ropes, cams can walk on smooth cracks and a more active leg work is required (my inner thighs ached after the first day on limestone). We would link to the various faceted searches on theCrag as well as link to detailed technical descriptions on wikipedia. Over time it would be good to embed a photo of a cliff on theCrag of each type.

We would be happy to support this work, maybe enhance the faceted searches (eg order logbook by rock type) based on your recommendations. The article does not have to be 100% complete, but when you are happy we would do a shout out on Facebook asking for others to input.

It is much better for you to take the lead on this, because you are the expert and we are basically too busy to do the a proper job on this in a timely fashion.

If you are happy with this direction and putting your name to an article then I will create a google doc for you to work on. I recon there will be a few climbers who are really interested in this aspect of climbing, and not just geologists.

@flugrost
Copy link

Hi Simon, thank you.

It will take some time :)
In the meantime please add "slate" to metamorphic rocks and as you previously whished, "brecia" to igneous :) Indeed not all fits into agglomerates. You were right :)

BTW: I added some photos. Can they only be seen by inlogged members? No. As I see listed photos under Germany when I am not logged in.
Nummer of photos is displayed under "Index", but when I click "photo" I get the display 0 Photos in Huberfelsen. When I am logged in, I obviuosly see all the photos which I uploaded. Who can see the photos? I do not find privacy settings for photos.

Ah, Harald has a private account. I think that photos, ascents and profile of private accounts are hidden. He will have to set his account to public.

We have discussed making privacy settings more fine tuned. This is not on my radar yet.

@flugrost

  1. Rock type:
    sorry for causing work. I obviously mistyped: it's "breccia".
  2. Private settings:
    The only setting I find is "Public: Make my logbook and profile public". This can be activated or not. As I do not use thecrag as a logbook and in general I am not eager for connecting my contributions with my name, I did not activate. (What would be displayed? flugrost or may name? flugrost unfortunately would be easy to connect wirh my name in connection with Steinwald. My fault :) Maybe I can change.) However I did not realize that this also affects the photos, especially as I myself can see them, as long as I am logged in. As long as the privacy settings are not finetuned, maybe it's helpful just to write something like "Public: Make my logbook and profile public and also enable common access to my uploaded photos". Generally it's a pitty, as photos give live to the cliffs and climbs and surely make thecrag more attractive for users.

BTW, Just for your info (I generally don't care about it):

When I have a look in "Recent contributions by Max" something seems not to work. Info there "updated a grade for" listing a lot of climbs. Some of the lists refer to climbs where I just deleted my personal ticks (gym DAV Karlsbad, 41 min ago), the others refer to climbs where I only updated rock type of crack/cliff about 6 hours ago but never did anything else, especially not in single climbs. I not even clicked them :) so I don't think I did something wrong.

Harald

Good morning. Finished. Each (!) rock type has an example even within
Thecrag. At the moment I do not know how to proceed. Maybe you have an idea
how to include some f the info best.

Did you already realize this UK-climbing site? For sure!?

They also included rock types. Not all we have, but most of them. Really
good! Think there also is a geologist included :)

And their search-funktion even assisted me on some of the rock types I had
problems with.
I might know where to look for the rock, but do not allways know where
there are climbable ones.

http://www.ukclimbing.com/general/search.html?cof=FORID%3A11&ie=UTF-8&q=Granodiorite&sa.x=0&sa.y=0&cx=012320157739014986830%3Azyxmlwsazl

Also a great thing and looks like a good page in the whole.

And keep in mind there still are a lot of rock types not included :)
E.g. salt. However I can't imagine that there really are climbing sites.
Maybe somewhere in mines you can climb, but not really sport climbing or
mountaineering :)

Have a nice day.

Good morning,

I have been contacted by a climber and route setter. e met yesterday.
He refered to

https://www.thecrag.com/climbing/germany/oberpfaelzer-wald/area/427256604

and

https://www.thecrag.com/climbing/germany/oberpfaelzer-wald/area/420181041

There obviously is not really an official allowance but a
toleration for climbing and route setting only, because of a special
situation and natural conservation
area and so on.

The toleration too only was given presupposing that no publication at
all will be done in order to prevent to much traffic and problems so on.

One can surely see this in different ways and agree or not. However, it's
the decission of the owner respectively of the authorities. I personally
think they themselves gave a toleration despite they were not supposed and
legitimized to do so.
So, we, the climbers cannot complain and better try to avoid any trouble in
order to keep the chance for climbing at least on "low level".

Is it possible somehow to switch these two crags to a not-public
state? Otherwise I will have to copy and save and then delete. The only
other involved person is Christoph Rauch, whom I already informed.

Best regards
Harald

The problem with removing it (besides not being able to tick routes) is that that it will be added again by someone else, and that is just on our site. It will be documented in many places on the Internet. So we remove it now, but it is just not possible to stop people re-adding it.

The best thing to do is to keep it with a clear statement and no access descriptions and no geo location. It should be made clear in area description that the crag is not to be located nor access descriptions to be provided. Some areas we have removed topos and route descriptions as well.

On a technical issue the site does not have a delete, all you can do is change the name and move it. But this is a short term solution as somebody will add it back.

Maybe you can get the land owner to talk to us directly so we can work out a suitable long term solution. At the moment we are talking through three people.

Hi,

I do not know if you already realized that:

just for myself I included the climbable rock info and links to
the searchfunctions for the individuable rocks within the test area:

https://www.thecrag.com/climbing/world/area/812165115

Possibly it is of any use for you as well.

Refering to an older idea of you:

It is hard, no, nearly impossible to describe individual typical climbing
features
and resulting climbing technics of rocks. Strongly depends on the site, too.

That's the case especially within metamorphic and igneous rocks.
It not only depends on material but on structures and textures, exposition
and weathering too.
E.g. a Granite can be fine and big grained or even has a porhyritc
structure.
However possibly this all doesn't matter, in case the Granite is polished
by water or ice
or as you mainly use younger tectonic structures like cracks for climbing.

Have fun.

Best regards
Harald

That's really cool, but I'm not sure how to best take advantage of it. But this does immediately jump out at me as perhaps the start of a much better way of creating help docs and articles, @scd what's you thoughts about having a new node type or 'help' or 'article' and then we could collaboratively edit stuff like this? There'd be a bit of work to scan the markdown and calc any stuff we need to inject only if needed like the grade tables etc. template changes but nothing that we wouldn't have already done or need to do anyway with any plan to make the help stuff data instead of code.

@scd

scd commented Jan 13, 2016

Yes help articles does have hierarchy similar to the nodes. There is no structural reason why we cannot do this.

There may be multiple root nodes (ie not just World). The main thing is that some of the help articles are Mason templates, some of which rely on system data.

I have wanted to put the help into the database for a long time.

If we do it I would like to take a bigger view and open up the help to general community help so we get articles from others.

Probably the biggest benefit will be it will hook into our Karma, and streams framework with only minimal integration work.

I think we are in an amazing position to provide a very unique framework for blogging climbing articles.

Even though I see no technical reason why this will be particularly difficult there will be a fair bit of work on lot's of little issues.

We should nut this out further.

hi @flugrost, can you provide a link to the test area changes? Nobody is watching that area, it's essentially a place we move things to be deleted later on.

Also if you can provide better translations for the rocks that would be great. @rouletout and @nicHoch are on the core team and both speak german, but none of us are geologists :)
