Steps to install screen on latest rasbian/emulation station don't work.
References to AdaFruit FAQ no longer helpful, as has been automated into a self contained bash script which doesn't expose any individual steps to user.

If EmulationStation uses a recent version of Rasbian, the screen is no longer supported in the latest kernel versions (an outdated "device tree overlay" and changes to how framebuffers work). You'll need to roll your kernel back to the 4.19 series to get to something that supports it. sudo rpi-update e1050e94821a70b2e4c72b318d6c6c968552e9a2 rolled me back to something appropriate for my own applications, but there may be additional work needed to get EmulationStation working, or the 4.19 kernel may break other things.
Ah, I mentioned EmuStation because that's the documentation section in question, but I'm no gamer ;-)
And -- Thanks for all that -- but sadly a rollback is a "no-go" with the Rasbian Buster configuration I need, I am afraid.
I've decompiled the DTO, but it's a little above my paygrade to fix it ;-) I've gotten as far as working out it's based on the solomon / ssd1289 controller - and am about to start seeing if I can "contort" the default fbtft driverstack to speak to it, but there's some rather weighty strings of "magic numbers" in the overrides that I fear are going to be my downfall.
I'll post back in this thread again if I get any further - and, -- again -- thanks again for the pointers.
