Done with the changes and updated the changelog in the client specification file. I will create a new release within an hour. I am currently drafting the release notes. |

The new client spec doesn't mention the old method at all, which makes it look like it's already been removed. This PR adds a deprecation notice.
Do not merge this until the client spec release.
