Improve exchanges with other federated networks #13822
Comments
I totally agree with how tedious it is to share PixelFed/PeerTube content on Mastodon, even if it's possible. That would be a very nice step forward in terms of usability. |
Someone on mastodon came up with the expression remote interact which I find very appropriate ^^ ( thanks @BoFFire ) |
It would be very nice to have this and really great for new users that don't know what is the Fediverse and all possibilities with it :) |
Plus, If quoted link is authored by blocked/muted accounts/servers, We can hide it too |
Duplicate of #1399 |
Pitch
If a mastodon user publishes a link to Youtube, Vimeo, Instagram etc... and I click on it my browser will open a new tab and I should connect to its sites if I want to interact with the original publication.
What bothers me is that it's the same with the other networks that are part of the fediverse: (peertube, pixelfed, etc...).
I find it really unfortunate not to improve this because it's one of the biggest strengths of federated networks that in my opinion is not really exploited at the moment.
Currently mastodon allows you to view youtube or peertube videos in mastodon, that's great.
But if a user publishes a link pointing to a peertube video, I have to copy/paste the link in the search bar to find the original publication and comment it ... it's tedious, long, weird ...
I wish I could interact with the original publication without having to do these manipulations. Via an icon for example.
I made a small model to better illustrate my thinking:
This way I can either comment the publication of "mastodon: user 1" or comment the original publication of the "peertube: user2".
Here I used the existing icon to display the original publication, but it could be a third icon to invent or another practical solution.
Motivation
For me, the strength of the federated networks must be highlighted.
I can't comment a youtube video from mastodon, but I can comment a peertube video ... but currently it's very complicated if it's not the original post.
