Nicholas Barnes has reported in the forums that some MySQL/MariaDB config can cause problems with TKLBAM - causing it to simply not backup the DB! Whilst it probably shouldn't be fatal, it should clearly note the failure - to at least make debugging easier.
Nicholas' report suggests that the root issue appears to actually be a bug in mysqladmin - where it does not think that max_allowed_packet is a valid config option. I hope to investigate that more closely and assuming that I can confirm the root cause as a mysqladmin bug, report the bug upstream (to Debian initially - depending on where mysqladmin comes from, perhaps to MariaDB devs?).
In the meantime, we should look at at least ensuring that the TKLBAM error is reported to the user in a more friendly and obvious way. Although clearly, a proper workaround would be better.
