Proposal

  • Add character marker pair \png …\png* for "geographic proper names".

A companion USX 3.0 proposal exists at: ubsicap/usx#7

Details

In China, there are various groups which have the practice of distinguishing visually between proper names of people and proper names of geographic places in published text. This occurs in the contexts of both Roman and non-Roman scripts are used. Teams have published materials that use single underline to present proper people names and double underline to present geographic proper names. Alternatively, dotted underlines have been used for geographic proper names. Special formatting for names can assist readers to know what the text means, especially those readers who still struggle with basic reading skills and can be quickly overloaded by the transliterated names.

Application Support Requirements

  • Extend ParaTExt to support double or dotted underlines as marker formatting options.
