That was two years ago.

The new GitLab for Drupal is coming at some point. Phase 1 to use GitLab as the Git backend was ready in March 2019.

But phase 2 to allow merge requests (and no more patches!) is still pending and appears to have stalled.

Therefore there's still value in fixing this, or if it will never be fixed, remove it to prevent confusion.
