The author of pygist is advocating matplotlib. Go to:

http://bonsai.ims.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~mdehoon/software/python/index.html

and click on "Scientific plotting" in the sidebar. Let's make sure matplotlib
can plot mixed element meshes reasonably efficiently and then drop it (I just
fixed gist to plot mixed element meshes).

matplotlibViewer has supported irregular 2D meshes since r2336
