The tray window, with multiple folder shortcuts added

The Tray is a special window that floats above your taskbar and allows quick access to folders. It is intended as a replacement for folder toolbars on the taskbar, which were removed in Windows 11. Its name and function are also somewhat inspired by the original "tray" concept for Windows 95 (not to be confused with the modern notification area).

The tray can be enabled in Settings. By default it is set to display your Links folder (C:\Users\[your name]\Links). A special property of the Links folder is that dragging any file into it will create a shortcut by default (hold Shift to move instead).

Currently the tray must be manually positioned where you want it. Drag the gray bar on the left/top to move the tray, and drag the bottom-right corner to resize. If you've moved your taskbar to another side of the screen (prior to Windows 11), you may want to change the tray direction in Settings.

To adjust the size of the tray icons, hold Ctrl and scroll with the mouse wheel.

Known issues:

  • If the tray ever disappears behind the taskbar, it should reappear when you click any open window or the Desktop. This is a bug.
  • If files don't appear when you drag them to the tray, try pressing F5 to refresh.
  • If you've set the tray to open at startup, it may take a few seconds to show up. It might help to turn off some other startup apps in Windows Settings that you're not using, like Microsoft Edge or OneDrive.
